Default Is 2016 GT4 981 too Old in 2024?

Hey guys,

Wanted to get your opinions on this. I was recently in the market for a new BMW M3, but then recently test drove the 718 GTS 4.0 and it was a drug I shouldn't have indulged in. Now I'm thinking of getting into the mid engine porsche. That being said for the same price as the 718 GTS 4.0 / BMW M3, I'm able to pick up a 2016 Porsche 981 GT4 with about 25,000-35,000 KM on it. I'm new to Porsche and was wondering if some of yall can chime in.

Is the 981 2016 GT4 too old now considering it's about 8-9 years old?
Would maintenance and service costs be significantly higher given the 25-35k mileage and that it's an older car?
These cars have not really depreciated for the people who bought them 8 years ago. That being said, I know you can't really know for sure, but in your humble opinion, you think I'll lose quite a bit on these considering they're quite old and havent depreciated much (an in fact appreciated)?

Oh and lastly, I'm looking at about $120K CAD ($88K USD) for the 2016 981 GT4 with 35K km on it (no buckets). Is this somewhat a good deal?

Thank you so much!

The GT4 and GTS have the same engine, the latter with just 9HP more. But the GT4 is basically a track car, and that's A LOT of miles if it was tracked. I personally wouldn't get a GT4 over a GTS even if it was at the same price. It has a punishing ride compared to a GTS, it's way too low to the ground to be useful outside a track, plus they have more front overhang, and do NOT offer front axle lift. So you need to decide what you want the car for, since they're very different cars, even though they look very similar. Good luck.

^^^^ He’s asking about the 2016 981 GT4 which is a 3.8K mill and different from the 4.0 engine in the 982 4.0 GTS.

Overall kind of an apples oranges query.

If you like the GT chassis feel, then go for the 981.

Personally, I don’t like the 3.8 motor…it’s weak on top.

You should be able to find each to test drive if you have a little patience.

Oh, I thought the '16 GT4 already had the 4.0. My bad. So I'd be even more inclined to get a GTS 4.0. But yes, those 2 models are like apples and oranges.

I think part of the reason these cars have not depreciated is that they are reliable, high-quality, enjoyable cars. Just be aware that you will probably have to replace plastic bits, as they do get brittle with age. Definitely get a ppi, and if it is clean, buy and enjoy!

Depends on what you want to do with the car.

in my opinion, If you want to drive and enjoy it, probably the new GTS, if you want to leave it mostly parked and take it out once in a while to talk cars in a parking lot, the 981 GT4 is probably the better choice.

both are great choices. For me, having a new car to my spec with the more powerful engine was the obvious choice.

My friend has a 2016 GT4 she bought 2 years ago. Currently sitting at 40k miles. Zero issues. Its actually been her most reliable car. Sure maintenance is going to be expensive, but not much more than an M3 and its going to be a lot more reliable. I say if you find a good deal on one, go for it. You'll only be thinking about how good the car is once you are in the drivers seat anyways

a 981 gt4 has experienced most, if not all, of the anticipated depreciation. same cannot be said for 2020+ 4.0 cars.

If you're gonna track a lot get the GT4.
If you're not gonna track a lot get the GTS.

Huh? The GT4 is a track car. I know that a significant proportion of GT cars sadly go to the C&C world, but they're designed to be driven hard.

Yeah, the thought in my original post was not fully developed there. The point was that the answer really depends on what you want to do with it.

If you want the best preservation of value, buy the GT4 and mostly park it in the garage.

If you want a daily driver, the newer GTS might be the right move.

and there are different scenarios where the best choice might be one or the other.

8 years in car world is a long time. However, GT# porsche's always keep their values well - these are bespoke cars that represent the best of what Porsche could offer at their respective times. Couple that with the fact that a mid-engine, light weight Porsche with a NA motor and a manual transmission is unlikely to happen again, I would get the GT4. The recipe for M3s and etc, are still going to be around for a little while longer.

The Porsche will for sure feel much more special than a M3, but the M3 will definitely be much faster and keep up with modern day cars (if what you're looking for is drag racing ppl on the highway).

Another way to look at it is - people still want old, mechanical Rolex watches, no one wants a gen 1 apple watch.

Are you looking at PCV?
I'd say you look to spend another $20+k and scoop up a 718 GT4....Get PPI from a reputable shop if not buying CPO from a PC

GT4 is a street car..... GT4 clubsport is a track car. That being said my 16 spyder has been the most reliable Porsche ive ever owned.

it all depends on what your intended use is
if it is a special weekend car then 981 GT4 is a good buy, what you may pay for in terms of maintenance/repairs you will make up for in lack of depreciation (they arguably won't depreciate much at all from here if you keep the mileage low), that price is decent for CDN market but no deal
if its more of a regular use car I would go GTS 4.0
