Default Who can rebuild a front differential these days?

I have a front differential on my '02 that is making more and more noise. It has 62K miles on it. First thought it was tire noise, with the tires being what they are, but to my ears the noise was different. Then I was convincing myself it was a wheel bearing. So when I took it in to my favorite Indy shop, they put it on the rack and spun the wheels under power and found the noise is coming from the diff. They say it might be a bad bearing, or worse. That was at the end of the day, so we didn't get any further than that. They want to try changing the fluid first to see if that remedies anything, since we don't have any record of it being changed (and it was nasty looking).

Being paranoid, I started sniffing around the internet to see what a used diff would cost at places like DC Auto and LA Dismantlers. I've also seen conversations about people having theirs rebuilt. At this point though, I don't know what components are bad. Anyone have a similar experience with it needing repair, and what the complications and remedies were?

Thanks much,
Steve

ebay and various dismantlers have them oretty available if you need to buy a used one and they are a hair less than the repair kit so seems like you have options

Take it apart. If it's the bearings look at the bearing code and see if you can order a set on the cheap.

Default Tiptronic 996 to GT2 conversion

Has anyone got any input and information on my 996 Turbo - Tiptronic - 2wd conversion?
My main concern being, does the gearbox and transfer box sort it's self out when the prop shafts is removed?
I know the prop shafts is removed at some shops for for dyno runs, so I'm guessing the tip is OK?

I ran my Tiptronic car with the front diff removed and had no problem at all. The Tiptronic has an open differential so rear wheelspin might be more likely.

So I am pretty sure the front diff on my tiptronic doesnt work..

When I jack the front wheels up in park, the front wheels spin freely.

I am guessing at this point its just dead weight?

Doesn't the PSM more or less act like a rear diff?
