Default GT4RS getting new engine

About 45 days ago I was heading back from a car show in Tampa and the engine (850 miles on odometer) started making knocking sounds then all of a sudden made a large thunk and the engine shut off. Long story short, connecting rod #4 came apart which is why the engine locked up.

Question: How will this affect future value of the car since Porsche is putting in a new engine under warranty? I know when you have an accident you can sometimes recover money for diminished value. Just curious. Thanks!

A replacement engine under warranty at that mileage should not affect its value to 'most' people...

I would be more concerned about getting it replaced and back on the road, not what it might sell for later.

A new motor shouldn’t matter to buyers (I wouldn’t care). Better that it happened under warranty.

How much is one of those things out of warranty?

I'm sorry for your trouble!

I agree on the comments above. I don't consider a mechanical failure the same thing as an accident. Parts fail (or can be found to be faulty) all the time, sometimes for random reasons that aren't endemic to an entire production run. As long as the car was repaired properly, at a Porsche dealership with factory parts and given a complete clean bill of health + report, I don't think it should have any negative impact whatsoever.

It would be different if it was a mechanical failure based on driver error, like money shift in a manual transmission. But if it was a result of normal operation, then the biggest downside is that you'll be out of our car for just a bit of time while it gets repaired.

It might make you consider an extended warranty, however!

Sorry to hear. Wouldn't effect me buying it. In fact I bought my GTS 4.0 with a engine replacement done at the factory delaying delivery.

Just curious (can PM me if easier) is the car stock? Seems to be an ultra rare failure.

Wonder if you’ll have a full new warranty on the engine after replacement?

Not sure what you are implying here, the warranty continues to run from the day it went into service, no change in the expiry date.

I was thinking the same thing if it was me buying a GT car. It's $80,000 to rebuild and $50,000 to replace. I'm not planning on getting rid of any of my GT cars, just something to know for future sale. Thanks for the feedback! Should be on the road later this week.

No mods done to the car. It's still new. I'll pass on details regarding the warranty if there's any change.

Not sure how long the owner has had the car but I would ask to Porsche to extend the powertrain warranty on just the new motor to a new 4 year term. The value won’t be affected drastically but it will certainly turn some buyers off with a motor being replaced. The added warranty would certainly help in my opinion. Worst they can say no,

This brings back memories about the conrod fiasco in 2021.

Long thread here.

https://rennlist.com/forums/718-gts-...r-and-gt4.html

Affected owners were given money compensation and warranty extension.

Repair option is rebuild at dealer or new engine dropped in.

Really depends on how long the owner was inconvenienced.

I remember the 2021 992s were held in port for up to 6 months due to EPA hold, each owner was compensated depending on length in port.

If it was an expeditious repair probably nothing, if longer then ask away.

I haven't had use of the car since March 16th. I haven't even gone past the "break in" period yet. The engine was supposed to arrive last week but no word yet.

Similar situation happened with my friend's M2 a few years back.
All BMW did for him was extend his warranty a bit longer at no cost. The car was down for 3 months I think. It's a distant memory for him now and he's been enjoying the car since... unfortunately "crap" happens.
Maybe see if you can get an extension of the warranty?

There's the odd thread in the 992 GT3 forum of failures, 3-4 that I can recall over the last few years. Given the production numbers though, yes rare.
