I'm in Seattle and have a 996 turbo! I'm curious what has to be done to run this wide of a wheel?

All depends on what you're intended use is and what tire width/height is used, with what combination of suspension/adjustability for required camber, brake/shock clearance, etc.
I'm running GT uprights with 380 brakes, GT2 liners, full mono ball Tarett and have room to run the intended 275/335 tires, however moving the front radiators slightly and rolling the fenders is necessary to have enough clearance, and you'll possibly loose some turning radius. One could use less tire and achieve a fit with less work too.
