Pending GT3 Manual Purchase--Over-rev question
Hi Guys.
Would appreciate your help please. I'm about to purchase a 2018 GT3 Manual. About a year old but only 1400KM (~900miles).
I had the local Porsche dealership do an inspection and in doing so they found 2 instances of over-revving via the on board computer.
They're telling me that its a not a big deal. BUT that a third instance would require a complete engine test to continue warranty. And a fourth over-revving would entirely void the warranty.
What do you think? Any long term damage? Would you still purchase the car?
Many thanks, really appreciate it

So, they found Range #1 over-revs and Range #2 over-revs?
That's normal.
How many?
Total op hours?
Last over-rev event (time stamp).
We need a more complete picture.
So, they did the "drive it like you stole it", engine break in.

Thanks guys. So helpful. I'll ask the dealer if he can help with the info. I moved to Dubai about a year ago and while I hope it was the "drive it like you stole it" break-in, my suspicion is that it was a careless first owner. The car is being offered for sale by a private dealer. Thanks again

Do a cylinder leak down test and if it shows good numbers, it's fine (under 10% is normal for any random engine from what I understand and 5% is what most brand new engines would test at).

I agree with everything folks have said (motor is likely fine)- however, the "buyer" in me would be a little concerned with over-revs in a car that is still arguably in the break in period... The market in Dubai may be very different than here in the States, but there a plenty of these cars to choose from these days so jumping on a car with an early history of over-rev's (if any in Range 3+) with very little engine time post event (900 miles total on the car) would cause me to drive a very hard deal (maybe $20k below market) or simply find an example without the potential issues. If the initial owner had just waited to break the motor in a bit longer before exceeding the limits I might feel a bit different - still a lot of inventory out there to choose from.

I think the dealer will honor warranty after a severe over-rev if enough operating hours have gone by.

Exactly my concern as well. Warranty period is also only 2 years in Dubai. It is extendable but not once the warranty is voided. Thanks for your reply

Thanks. Main concern is the warranty. I live in Dubai, won't keep the car forever as I will eventually return to the US and its impossible to take the car with me.

Thanks, in fact the market here is very different from the US. Manuals are almost impossible to find. From my research, there are 4 manual GT3s (991.2) for sale in all the UAE. This one is being offered at a great price as the dealer has had the car since January. But that's not the reason to buy a car like this one. I was doing some research on the forum on this issue and someone started a post some time back related to over-revving.....and someone answered with: consider the value, not the price. Nicely put I thought.

WELL, I totally messed up on replying directly to the comments posted....instead posted as new replies. Anyway, many thanks for the really helpful comments and thoughts. The dealer selling the car is being totally cool and not pushing me to close the deal by any means. And just waiting to hear back from Porsche dealer on which ranges the two incidents occurred within. Keep you posted

You buy the car AND the prior owner, who hopefully wasn't driving any of these cars
