Default When bore scoring isn't (997.2 bore scoring fear)

I just - I mean juuuust (2 hours ago) took delivery of the car I've been looking for and dreamed about forever, the car in my sig. I'm afraid however, that this could be a piston slap sound. It was shipped cross country from CA (San Diego car nearly its whole life, but bought in Bay Area). See video...

To answer questions - yes I had a ppi done, was told engine was healthy. No the bores weren't scoped as the place where I had it done didn't do those for water-cooled cars. Since I just got it I can't say for sure but no soot in exhaust, no smoke when I started it. Don't know about oil consumption bc again I just got it. 55,502 miles.

Very sorry to hear this. Since you just bought the car, can’t you tell whoever sold it to you that they sold you a defective car and ask for your money back? I’m certain they knew about this before selling it. Possibly it was the main reason why they wanted to get rid of the car in the first place.

Best of luck

Hey, I have a 2009 997.2 with 50K miles currently.
I purchased it in March /2015 CPO from Champion Porsche with 40k miles.
The engine sound in your video sound just like my mine from the day I bought it.
So to me this sounds normal at idle.

I am not sure I hear anything too abnormal, but maybe it is hard to pick up the sound on my phone.

IMO going back to the seller based on a sound would be difficult especially since it was a long distance transaction. If you are sure there is a sound your best bet is to get it in for bore Scoping

I bought it from a small dealer in CA that deals in a lot of water cooled cars. They bought it a few weeks before from the previous owner. Yes, I have contacted the dealer. He thinks due to the x51 pkg it is valve noise. I don’t think so but need to make my case, so I plan to have it scoped. Any other suggestions? Also anyone make a recommendation for where to take it for scope in Northern NJ?

Unfortunately because shipper had car in his possession PPI shop will deny any wrong doing as well as seller.
Both will blame shipper for driving it or over revving engine.

Is "Car sold as is where is with no warranty stated or implied." written on Bill of Sale?

Sorry to hear about this.

Thanks all. This is a great community - I appreciate your time for the replies. There is a 1 month or 1k mile ‘bumper-to-bumper’ warranty included

To me I hear two different noises, a ticking noise and a thumping (?) noise. Both of which sound fairly normal to me?

The "thumping" sound I hear most clearly around 20 seconds onward and yours might be a tad louder than my car. It seems to be coming from both sides in your video but that may just be me. My car (2010 3.8l 35k miles) makes similar noises from both cylinder banks.

Only thing that will give you peace of mind is to pay to have the cylinders scoped.

****.

Sounds like its on the driver side? Can any of you 9A1 pros identify if that could be a fuel pump going bad? Water pump is over there too. It will knock when the bearing goes, but typically doesn't sounds like that.

Get an oil sample and see if Blackstone can identify the oil weight. If they put heavy weight oil in to reduce the knock if would prove fraud.

Fingers crossed its something simple.

Keep us posted. This is the worst nightmare of any new buyer.

I'm definitely hearing something that doesn't sound right. I've had a slight ticking sound on both my 997.2's, especially when cold but this sounds like more than just slight ticking. Whatever it is you should be in good shape though with the warranty. As for the possibility of the PPI provider or the seller washing their hands blaming the shipping company, wasn't the mileage recorded when the car was picked up? I've had four cars shipped long distance and the mileage at the time of pickup was always recorded and verified by both the seller and the shipper. Also recorded by the shop doing the PPI btw. Good luck and please keep us updated.

Now that I listen to it again, I think I agree, it does sound like it's coming from the drivers side cylinder bank.

just for your comparison purposes, here is mine. One video for each side of the car, not as close to the engine as your video however.

These were taken a couple hundred miles after I bought the vehicle. Doesn't sound any different today.

You may want to to remove the serpentine belt and start it up again just to make sure one of the accessory's isn't causing this.
