If you're looking for the most egregious level of a la carte options price gouging in a lower end brand, Mini is the right choice.

No doubt pricy. But the Clubman is, essentially, one of the last station wagons available in the US with a manual transmission. OK, it's small--the ideal size for me would be a bit bigger, but not much more than a bit--but it's still a wagon. And sporty wagons with manual transmissions are cool...my $0.02 worth.

PS: 911s are cool, too, of course!

Manual. th 911 is a very planted and super capable experience. The mini is fun, toss able and feels VERY light on its feet. The 6 speed in the mini S is more of a joy to row than the 7 speed in the 911. Obviously the 911 is faster in every way. Just speaking to fun factor.

I did. Went from my 997 to a Cooper S. This was a while ago (~10 years now) so some of my complaints may have been addressed by BMW/Mini. Great looking little car, and fun to toss around. Mine was rattly as heck, and got worse over time. Run flat tires were expensive, wore out quickly, and gave no grip. Shifter was mushy but ok once you got used to it. But for me the biggest fault was the horrible torque steering in corners. The front wheel drive just took a lot of the fun out of it for me. It appreciated being able to wind it up and drive it hard without risking my license. But corners were no fun anymore, and I missed having a car that would hang its rear end out.

We've had 4 between 2 of us (2009 Clubman S, 2010 Clubman JCW w/ tune, 2011 S cabrio, 2015 S hardtop). Fun to toss into corners. Torque steer was the worst on the tuned JCW, but manageable on the others. Like Porsche, take the base price of any model and add ~$10K - $15K for options. If you were to buy one, ditch the run flats.

Not true with any of my BMWs. But maybe tossing around makes a difference.

Golf R- if you don't mind your right knee hitting constantly against the hard center console and the excessive seat bolstering holding you in like a prison. No thank you.
