Default Beginner Racing?

A very Green DE student of mine, in a sparkling new 458 Ferrari, who seemed intrigued by the idea of wearing a fire suit with epaulets and logos, inquired about the process of becoming a racer. "Do they have Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced races," he asked, sincerely. My Vaudeville spit-take was probably not the appropriate response.

Don’t underestimate anyone who shows up at a track and asks a lot of dumb questions.

You can interpret this statement MANY different ways.

Did you tell him to go back to the Ferrari dealer and inquire about the Ferrari challenge customer program? That's where big egos and more money than brains goes. Sorry to anyone I offended. I guess I can say it since I'm a Ferrari guy myself who used to race one.

I dont think its such a dumb question frankly. I would argue that there are many levels to racing, that could easily be viewed as "beginner, intermediate and advanced." Club racing, endurance racing with PBOC, other amateur racing can be viewed as "beginner" racing.

Seems to me there are guys that think if you havent raced all your life, then you arent a member of the club and its too late to start. Got news for ya, without newbies/novices, the sport dies.

Nothing wrong with wearing.a fire suit in DE, no matter what group you're in. Now wearing your fire suit in the morning at your hotel for breakfast with your racing gloves stuffed in the pockets is a whole different story.

IMHO the racing question is not stupid either.

Yes, there are. Most of use are stuck in the beginner group. To move up to intermediate, talent helps but a big bank account helps more. To move up to expert, you need both.

Agree...I dont mind those that ask questions.....the ones to avoid are those that ask zero questions and are overzealous and dangerous on track.....

If you think about it, Club racing is beginning racing, IMSA is intermediate and F1 is advanced .

Yeah F1 the pinnacle but they let Crashdor Maldonado in F1 and Grosjean is still on the grid and stroll's dad bought a spot. I like F1 but isn't 2 guys racing each other because everyone else is so far back? 20 car 10 teams so really 10 different cars then 2 of those 10 are really Jr. Redbull and Jr. Ferrari so 8 guys racing.
