Should I stay away from this GT4? - OverRev Report Included
Hey everyone,
Long time lurker on the forums, finally in the market to purchase one. I found one with the specs I want, but attached is the over-rev report, listed at $90k, (red one w/ 11.5k miles if you want to look it up). The car definitely looks like it has been tracked and maintains warranty from Porsche through Oct. 2019. Should I purchase aftermarket warranty to protect myself from future engine damage?

There are plenty of cars for sale that don't have over revs in the higher ranges. Probably better to pass on this car and find another. No reason to take the risk.

This:
I know the GT4 is not listed but 5&6 range is a potential problem! Maybe the valves are ok, but what about the connecting Rods? These are only 9A1 engines, not a GT3 block and heads & valves. Make sure your after market warranty knows about the over rev report when you contract them or they will possibly
void your warranty contract.

In my experience, if it happened a while back, it's fine - especially if you are covered by CPO. Typically bad things happen right away - as in the car does not make it home.

This info makes the most sense, and it means this particulat GT4 with the 9A1 engine exceeded 8400, but below 9500. But what was it exactly? 8400 scares me a little less than 9499! But caveat emptor!

Need to know the total operating hours and MSRP.
Something is strange about that report. You should not be able to get range 4 ignitions in excess of range 3 ignitions. The engine goes through range 3 to get to range 4. The range 4 and 5 ignitions may be some sort of glitch.
If the price is $20k or more below MSRP, it's probably worth a look if a PPI is otherwise OK.

Good question but dme ignition ranges are cumulative from new, so theoretically an engine can quickly “pass through” one range (such as 3 in the case), and spend “more time” in 4, 5, or 6! These would be indicative of VERY aggressive driving (track issue).

That's either a bogus repot, or a tampered DME. Or both. Can't have more over revs in rage #4 than you do in range #3. Impossible.

I trust you LexVan, but are you sure about this? Do you have proof from any written documents? Ignitions in any range are based on how “many” rpm the engine was in the range. 6 ignitions is 2 complete revolutions of the engine. It’s not “counting” range 3 ignitions when it is in range 4, as I understand it. And not all ranges are equal in terms of their range of rpm. Some are 500 (7500-8000) & some are less (7300-7500),, some are more (8000-9000). Just asking. Please show us. Thx.
