The replacement shift ****/boots Porsche is selling are garbage
I ordered a new stock black leather shift ****/boot from Sunset, and am sad to say that what Porsche is selling bears little resemblance to the original part. This ****/boot (which came in a Porsche box with the original part number) is not leather, it is vinyl. The color is wrong, more of a charcoal dark gray than black. And it is matte, whereas the original leather part is glossy. Doesn't look right, doesn't feel right.
This isn't Sunset's fault, of course, it's Porsche's, which is in effect making counterfeit parts under its own brand name and part numbers. It's disgraceful. If a part was originally leather, you should probably tell your customers that the replacement you're selling is now vinyl. I'm sending it back.

Ironically I just bought the same part from Suncoast (rec'd yesterday) and came to the same conclusion. No weight in the **** & the "leather" (or is it pleather) was crap.Cost me about $200 w/shipping, Calling them tomorrow re: return.
There website says a 25% restocking fee will be charged plus my cost to ship back.
Expensive mistake....pissed.

I'm not paying a restocking fee, no way no how. This is borderline fraud by Porsche. I'll pay a restocking fee when it's my mistake, not when Porsche sells me a counterfeit part.

I hear ya. Just stating what their policy is. No way I'm paying that either. Even if comes down disputing the charge w/Amex. Back it goes.
I decided to keep my original one which is not that bad (on my 964) & just replace the aluminum (5 speed) **** insert which is $35 from Pelican.
Another $0.50 part w/a ridiculous Porsche tax added for good measure.

There's a NIB/NOS carbon fiber one going for sale right here for BIN price of $2.5K, quite reasonable I thought. Now where was that post...where'd it go??

That is nuts. I bought an oem cashmere **** about a year ago and couldn’t get over how nice the leather was. Matched my Waldemar soft back sport seats perfectly.

Talk to Luke at Sunset. He's a good guy, and I'm sure he'll work this out. But, in the product description, I didn't see (I only scanned quickly) the word "leather" anywhere, so it seems you got what you ordered, and for only $178 is another clue. Heck, during their recent Black Friday sale, the price was only about $140.

Pardon! But I bet it is real leather! Take a picture of the inside and show us! I bought one myself, produced 2015, and was just as dissapointed that it was not as black nor as glossy as the old one, but it is sure leather!
The new gesr stick's dark grey leather are of the same colour as all the black Porsche leather nowadays, just not as black as it used to be!
But the plastic infill are nice with the textured finish, not worn and therefore glossy black as my old one!

It seems it would be possible to take one's old leather and use it to make a pattern, buy some leather on eBay and make one's own leather cover/boot or have a leather smith make it for you. Would probably cost less than a service part and will probably be of equal or better quality. On a 20+-year-old car, I am sure Porsche doesn't work too diligently with aftermarket suppliers for most non-drivetrain parts.
