Default Radar and a 911

Okay. I just was pulled over about 20 minutes ago by a cop in a Tahoe SUV. I know I was doing probably 58 in a 55, but the truck behind me was coming up on me really quick so I know he was speeding. The officer said he clocked me doing 67 in a 55, which I know I was not doing. I have a dash cam and although it does not show my speed it does show the F-150 truck behind me was coming up on me quickly. The officer did not ticket me and just gave me a verbal warning. I then told him I did not think I was speeding, but I know the guy behind me definitely was. He even acknowledged that because I drive a low profile car it can miss the front car especially when a larger taller vehicle is behind it. Because his vehicle was a Tahoe and the guy behind me was in a F-150 I think his radar totally missed me and clocked him. Anybody else have something like this happen to them? What are your thoughts of the probability of this?

Glad I had a dash cam as I would be fighting this one if he gave me a ticket.

A dash cam with no speed read out will not be effective in court, but a dash cam showing speed is proof positive, and proof is the only thing that will make a judge side with you over a cop.

A speed display dash cam and a radar detector are good countermeasures for exactly a situation like this.

I turned off the speed on my dash cam. More times than not it would work against me and not for me. LOL.

If you did get a ticket, get a lawyer, pay the court, get a reduced, non-points fine, and go away. I have never known these type of stories to win. Not that it is not possible, but you would be taking an unnecessary risk.... just pay, and go away. Everyone that ever owned a sports car has some sort of court room fantasy of beating the system and making a trooper look like a fool. .

Peace

No ticket so no worries. He asked when the last time I had a ticket. He kinda chuckled when I told him 1997. Here in Texas you can take a defensive driving course and the ticket goes away completely. Haven’t had to use that option yet. I have been pulled over more in the last 9 months of owning my 997.2 than I have in the last 2 decades. They are just looking for a reason to pull me over. Just because it looks fast does not mean it is going fast. Although it usually is going fast.

Bruce is right. If you can pay a fine with no points it’s the cost of doing business. Unless of course you can wire it a different way!

I have been in packs of cars on the interstate where a cop pulled one over that I know was not the fastest one.

In one instance a couple years ago I got stuck behind a left lane hog that was speeding up and slowing down and actively cutting people off who tried to pass him on the right. He was in a Mitsubishi Evo and I was in my Suburban. I hate passing on the right but in this instance, the guy was driving dangerously and people were getting really angry with him. I had my chance and finally got by him, just in time to pop over a rise and see a State Trooper taking radar in the median. I looked down and my speedo read 90mph.

I stayed to the right, knowing I was busted. When the Trooper got up to us, he lit up the Evo. I know the Suburban was the better reflector, so I just assumed that the Trooper got my speed but thought it was the sports car that was doing it.

or someone had called the Evo in and he was waiting for it.

Could be, but I know he zapped us because my V1 went nuts as soon as we topped the hill.

But yes, anything is possible.

Point is is that radar isn’t a very narrow beam like laser. Even if you’re aiming at a specific car, an adjacent car going faster can reflect back to the gun before the target car’s signal does.

Yup, me too. It shows on the camera display but doesn't get recorded in the movies. I'm usually 10-20 mph over the speed limit and if someone clearly ran a stop sign in front of me and I had the event on video, having the speed also there would blow my case.

Radar is a very wide beam so the largest object reflects it and then it's up to the officer to interpret the results he gets back, which usually means the faster car had to be the sportscar in the pack and not the Tahoe or pickup. Laser is different and they know exactly which car they shot. Also, old corvettes with their angled radiators and fiberglass bodies are notorious for not reflecting a good radar signal back to the police guns.

That is what I was thinking. Now which one? Escort or Valentine? or a built in one so it is not easy to see.
