Default FYI regarding manual Steering Rack Repair

My race car got hit pretty hard at my last race. After getting it up on the lift, I discovered why it would not turn to the right at all. Not only did the impact break the inner tie rod in half, it bent the crap out of the rack gear! Since this rack is an 83, I thought I would be in for an expensive/exhausting search for a new/used rack. So I went and saw my buddy Tim and he had a bunch of 924 manual racks laying around. I thought, hmmmmm, I wonder if that shaft is the same size. I figured it would be close but after taking both racks apart, they are the exact same shaft. So if anyone breaks a gear tooth or bends the shaft like I did, you can find 924 manual racks a plenty. You can rebuild it!
Took longer to go get the 924 rack than it did to break it all down and rebuild mine. As you can see from the worm gear, mine is the longer on the two. The 924 is shorter and would require a longer steering column intermediate shaft.

Good info thanks, so just to clarify are both the rack and the pinion the same or just the rack? I’d like to see pics also if you can get them to load.

just to dispel anyone who comes across this thread, the "rack assembly" from a 924 (including the whole housing) does NOT in any way work on a 944 chassis.
the housings mount up completely differently.

Ha ha, I once saw a 924 in a pick and pull yard and thought I've hit the mother load, that until I crawled under it.

V2 is correct. The housing mounts are not the same but the internals are.

Begs the question:

Will the longer 924 intermediate shaft fit a 944 column so that you can use the shorter 924 worm/pinion gear?

Or... is it possible to use the 944 power steering intermediate shaft? manual steering intermediate shaft is nla, power steering shaft still available.

Power steering shaft is too short to even fit a regular 944 manual rack so it won’t fit a rack with a shorter 924 pinion.

the 944 manual shaft is about 1" or 1.25" longer than the 944 power shaft.
the 924 manual shaft is another inch or so longer than the 944 manual shaft...so 2+" longer than the 944 power shaft.

I believe there are 3 different intermediate column shaft lengths. 924, 944 manual and 944 power. The pinion shaft worm gear is interchangeable between the 924 and 944 manuals so you could mix and match between those.
