Default 996 plunge. Opinion please.

Well, I'm closer to Porsche ownership more than ever. I have a deposit down on a 2003 996. 72000 kms. From Quebec. In Ontario since 2008. Annual oil changes in since 2013 from 57000 km. A few thousand km per oil changes annually. Between 2003 and 2010, car did 23000km. I have a gap of 3 years and about 30000km. Etest database show records of emissions test. Carfax shows same owner until 2017. In consideration that car has records from 0 to 23000 km, then from 57000 km to current under same ownership, should I be concerned?

Thoughts? I am getting the car inspected by a Porsche indy (likely EU) next week.

Change IMS right away or wait until clutch?

Any other opinions would be great.

Have cylinders scoped for scoring. If thats good and you are gong to take care of IMS i think you are good to go.

72,000km seems low. Any evidence of odometer rollback?

I bought my 996 C4S with 55km two years ago. Did a PPI with boroscope then LN Engineering’s IMS Solution when I took possession.

Love driving it.

There are better, faster cars but I’ve always loved the 996 C4S and I don’t regret buying it.

In my experience, if someone was going to roll back the km's, there would be an outlier in that data. Could someone have driven the car 100k in those couple years, and rolled it back to 30k? Yes. Is it likely? No.

I agree with what was said above. Get the inspection +boroscope. If it checks out, do the IMS. Not necessarily because it's a time bomb, but because it'll give you piece of mind. If you wait for the clutch, you'll be sweating.

Drive and enjoy!

I think a Durametric scan, or a PIWIS scan on the ECU would show a rollback on the odometer, no?

Service history, right from PFAFF shows annual oil changes for the most part and a number of minor repairs. Car is having a ppi at EU next Wednesday and will include borscope.

I looked at a Quebec car that had a gap in mileage in the Carfax/ Proof. I mentioned it to the sales person, he didn't know why either. Actually, he didn't care. I didn't pursue it further because it didn't have the right options. I never saw that car in person so it could have been a pos for all I know.

I bought my 2003 with 74,000 kms on it three years ago. It sat basically unmoved for 3-4 yrs. The CarFax on mine was also messed up, but it became evident on investigation that at one point mileage was documented on CarFax as "kms" rather than "miles", which threw all the number out.

Also, the lack of info may be as a result of servicing being done at a shop that doesn't input to CarFax, not all do. The shop I use for our family cars doesn't. Nothing they do shows up on CarFax.

If you can get a borescope PPI that would put my mind at ease. If the shop doesn't want to do borescope, I wouldn't bother paying for the PPI.

Where did they do the borescope from (sometimes the damage is down in the cylinder and you cant see it going in from the top) and did they provide you with pics?

Durametric scan showed 2 over revs, can’t remember how many hours ago. Mechanic was not concerned at all. No pics on borescope. Got compression and leaksown numbers, Mechanic discussed findings with me. Written material found a bunch of minor stuff which didn’t concern me. E brake needs to be adjusted, bank 1 a little sweaty. Biggest issue for me was a non working drivers seat motor. I also had filter cut open.

I am satisfied so far.
