Default Broken Windshield

I have a 2016 base Cab. I got into the car yesterday afternoon and discovered a large crack across my windshield. I haven't notified my insurance carrier yet. Approximately how much will this cost to replace? Do I need to take it to the Dealership, or can any local autobody shop take care of this?

Insurance usually covers windshields. If such is the case, I would take it to the dealership just to be on the safe side.

I replaced my windshield last week. Longtime independent glass place was recommended by the local P dealer. They send all their work there.
It was a $100 deductible and my insurance authorized OEM glass without even asking me. The car had a safelite windshield put in just before I bought it 3 years ago. I was glad to get back to OEM.

Very good info here:

I suspect you had a stone chip, and that became a crack. In the future, if you see a large/deep chip, have it repaired (about $75 and covered usually 100% by insurance) with the epoxy stuff by a mobil repair guy or any high quality glass shop.

Had to replace the windshield in my 12 991S. Went to the dealer recommended shop. Be sure to use OEM glass! Mine had the cameras in the windshield for the auto dimming mirrors etc.

Definitely go OEM glass and I’d avoid Safelite like the plague. I used them to replace the windshield in my BMW the week before I sold it (nice timing) and they did a terrible job. Moulding looked like crap and the sensor worked intermittently.

I wouldn't take it to "any" body shop, but your dealer will probably take it to their trusted guy - find out who that is.

Agree with the above, if insurance is paying then it is OEM. If you are paying, then avoid the cheap Chinese glass and go for OEM that doesn't have the Porsche stamp - in otherwords exactly the same (Pilkington?) glass but without a little Porsche part number stamped into the corner. Find a glass guy who knows what he is doing and you will be good.

I did that with a Cayenne a few years ago and the cost difference is huge, but it's exactly the same factory glass.

Just had mine replaced yesterday with OEM glass. $2400 CAD, and they absorbed my deductible in the price.

I was going to mock my own currency but that wouldn't be very Canadian of me

Our cars are so low, stone chips are enviable. Just wonder how big the stone chip has to be before it eventually turns into a crack. I have 2 maybe 3 stone chips that are noticeable and have always wondered if I should jut get them filled. The weird thing is, they just can't fill the small chip, they actually put a crack in the glass and then fill the entire mess they made. Gonna go to dealer for state inspection - will see what they say.

I had a cracked windshield replace in my last 911. Geico wouldn't approve OEM glass even after an appeal. I forget the exact numbers but insurance covered about $450 of it and I had to come up without somewhere near $800. There are several windshields for our cars depending upon options (at least 5 as I recall), so be sure they get the right one for your particular options (things like PDLS+ have a different mount for example).

Safelite is fine, just be sure to request a master installer (it seems they do this anyway for expensive cars). They have some of the most advanced glass placement and seal cutting equipment in the industry. They have done three windshields in three cars for us in the last few years and we've only had great results.

Well, you all have me nervous now, one person says awful, one says it will all be ok. My insurance will not pay for my windshield, so I really don't want to pay 2000.00 plus for OEM, or 1250.00 at dealer recommended shop. I have Safelite coming out on Friday, and it will be 525.00. I will call back and request a master installer, but do you think I will have issues with rain sensing wipers, or anything else? I don't mind paying up if necessary, but I figured I'd be safe with Safelite(no pun intended). There are a lot more fun things to spend 700.00-1500.00 dollars on than a piece of glass. Car in question is a 2012.5 Carrera S, any input or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
