Default 944 took a hit today

I tell ya, we can do everything we can to keep our old cars on the road and all it takes is somebody to not pay attention to mess it all up.

My best guess is that she was on her phone while behind me at the light (I noticed she kept looking down) and, when a car passed us in the right turn lane, she just assumed that the light changed and started driving without looking up from her phone. She literally just drove right into me. The damage isn't horribly bad but she really didn't even touch the bumper so the rear sheet metal caught it all. On the plus side, there are no creases in the body other than where the hit took place, broken windows, or hard to open doors (although I haven't tried to open the hatch yet).

No one was hurt. And, honestly, I'm not really even mad. My overriding concern is simply the fact that these cars aren't worth all that much to begin with and I'd hate for this to somehow manage to total the car. (In the event of that, yes, I'd become mad.)

Breaks my heart. (Quickly crosses fingers and says a prayer to the P-car gods that his doesn't suffer the same way at some point...)

Sorry to hear about it. Hoping for a speeding recovery without much bickering with the insurance company.

I find myself "Driving In My Mirrors" when approaching intersections or traffic. I never trust that people are paying attention.

That really blows. I'm amazed that there aren't more accidents caused by retards with cell phones. I spent 5 weeks with my son (truck driver) on the road and when stuck in bumper to bumper traffic I could look right down and can see half the people driving are texting on their phones!

Soooo, the bad news? odds are it's totalled, the insurance company won't really want to mess with it. Make sure you have all of your documentation up to snuff and start hunting for comparable cars so you get paid properly for it. Then buy the car back and part it/fix it/ect.

Man, that really sucks. I'd be livid..

Definitely fixable though, with enough effort... Body work's a b*tch, thankfully not too much of it to deal with.

Brian,
If they try to total it PM me and I will send you the excel spreadsheet I used when my S2 was stolen back when we were much younger (and the kid I took for her first driving lesson this weekend was in diapers). We will get you the maximum $$ for the car.

That stinks but I don't think it's totaled. Actual body damage is minimal. A hatch can be sourced locally (you probably know John Grimes) near Hagerstown MD and now is an excellent opportunity to upgrade to a Euro bumper Make lemonade from this lemon. I got my Turbo Euro bumper from a guy in England who posts on this forum. He offers group buys and shipping sometimes. I think his name is Justin, known here as 944UK.

It would cost you 2-3k at a body shop or abt 1.2k at a mobile repair place. The bumper is costly to repair due to the bumperette and the various pieces involved.

That sucks Brian. That's why we can't have nice things!

That would be true, if the bumper were damaged. But it doesn't appear to be.

Yeah, the bumper is virtually undamaged. It has some fine scratches along the top that may be a little too much to buff out but the SUV pretty much went right over it.

I just got back from getting an estimate from their insurance and it came to just $1,800, which is way lower than I was expecting.

At least we're off to a good start.
