Default 1986 Fuel gage not correct on 928

Fuel gage will not show full only 3/4 when tank is full of fuel. I jumper the terminals on the sender that should have sent the needle to the full line. It went just to the 3/4 mark. Sending unit is working correctly.
Could not locate a replacement. Any way of adjusting the gage?

Ya, ignore it. The red warning light however, is still highly likely to be accurate as its a set of contacts in the float itself.

Or remove cluster, clean everything, hope you don't make something else worse.

It is partially the cluster, but also the sender getting dirty inside on its wires. Cleaning the sending unit itself does wonders.

Someone just recently did a very nice write up and repair on this, I'm trying to find it. Maybe only 2 months ago?

It was me, the "rookie."

I would check the impedance across the two terminals you jumped (but on the sending unit and not connector) when the tank is full to make sure you are seeing below 3 ohm.

Make sure you test/clea the ground for the fuel sender as well. Then redo the jumper test.

If no change clean the ground point under steering column. Then redo the jumper test.

If if still no change, pull the pod and remove and clean the posts that feed the gauge with current. This was my fix. There is also a resistor you should test for proper impedance.

My gauge reads low and I was curious if the low fuel warning light functioned as intended. I knew the bulb was good as it goes on when the ignition key is turned to position 1, but will it illuminate when the reserve level of fuel had been reached in the tank? I drove it to work for three days with the needle below the red line covering about 70 miles, waiting for the light to go on. It did not and today I sputtered to a stop in the parking lot in front of my office. Lucky spot for that to happen.

There are good suggestions in this thread. Concerning the non-illuminating idiot light, does repair or replacement involve dropping the fuel tank?

i have the same "problem" in the rally car build with VDO gauges …. with sure still 30 l fuel the warning light comes on... i expected the level reading would not be exact ( VDO gauge /oem sender ) but not the warning light... that's just a contact i suppose… perhaps it will get more accurate with use & driving after 12 years of storage ??

Mine has a droopy fuel gauge as well.

It's a 1/4 tank low through the entire range.

Mine too! Reads about 1/4 tank low when in operation. But when I jumper the contacts, it reads full like it should.

Had the gauge inspected, and they said good. Gauge circuit foil is new
Fuel sender is new
Inspected the tank vent hose and there are no kinks

Same results. I'm at a loss. Someone mentioned cleaning the grounds, I can do that again but otherwise, I'm out of ideas

Check the resistance at the connections between the cluster and the fuel level sender.
any resistance on that wiring will skew the reading down.

Bumping this.

I decided to look into this problem again.

Volt gauge & fuel gauge reading low. Related?

Shorted the fuel sender plug and the fuel gauge only went up to 3/4. I measured the resistance at the plug, nothing.

Any ideas? I went through all the grounds that were reasonably accessible, did nothing. The ground on the steering column is not the issue.
