Default loud tick in engine

I have a 2005 Porsche Cayenne S - 4.5 V8.
It has developed a loud tick in the engine.
Any ideas as to cause or repair options.
Costs would help too.
Thanks
Greg

Greg, take it into an indy shop or dealer and replicate "tick" for them.. if a problem they will check for codes.

Don't pay dealers $100 to read codes, buy a code reader yourself on ebay. They're something like $30 or $40. But Clive's right - a "ticking" could be tons of things, and diagnosing something online with almost no information could be disastrous, or at best a wild goose chase. At the very least take a video with your phone and post it to youtube so we can hear it, where it's coming from, etc.

A loud tick in an internal combustion engine is always bad news. Stop running the engine.

Hi Greg,

Since you're new here - I'm guessing you just posted to whatever forum looked handy. This really belongs in the Cayenne forum - and a bit of searching there might turn up some possibilities as to what your loud tick is. Might be nothing, might be more than the vehicle is worth.

I'll move this thread over there..

How about attaching a sound clip. Upload it to YouTube and paste the link here.

If its cylinder scoring the solution will exceed the value of your Cayenne. Donate to your favorite charity comes to mind as the best option.

Or donate to your local gun club and have a real good time shooting it up with all sorts of lead throwers.
