Default 2010 vs 2005

Not sure where to post this as I'm new here. I'm looking to get back into a Porsche, having owned two previously, A 89 Targa and a 2010 Boxster. I'm looking at two manual trans cabs at Flemington Porsche. NJ. The 2005 911S is $39,993 with 63K miles. Sport Chrono Plus, local trade, comes with 3 month, 3300mile warranty . The other is 2010 4S with CPO, 50K miles for $54K . I know these are a little different but I would choose the best deal over the best price, and that is why I'm posting this. Without having seen either yet, do either one appear loike a decent car to go see? I am aware of the IMS potential on the 05 and would budget that in with a clutch change and maybe a price reduction? Any thoughts as I statrt my searc? Thanks

Get the 2010 4S while you can, it will be gone within a few days. I've had two 4S's and really enjoy the heavier front end feel and more planted grip they offer. Some 911 "purists" will say it handles like a truck....ummm, well that an alternative fact and fake news. Plus the 2010 has a LSD already.

All 997's are fabulous Porkers, but if you can afford a facelift/gen-2 car then the large range of enhancements applied makes them the pick, just be sure to take your time to find best value...

Here is quick list / summary of keypoint gen-2 changes for the S/4S models you are comparing/looking at
● New redesigned more modern front and rear with led lights and modified exterior mirrors.
● Direct Fuel Injection engines, more power better economy and reduced emissions. 385hp (+ 30bhp/15 lb-ft, slightly lower down the rev range) 0-100mph 9.9 instead of 10.7 seconds - (manual).
● Chassis, bodyshell and aerodynamic enhancements
● Improved manual gearbox, up-shift indicator aiding economy.
● Drive-off Assist now standard.
● New much improved PCM control unit – with touch screen + new hi-tech options (USB/Bluetooth).
● Improved interior touches
● New optional extras available, including PDK, PASM Sports Suspension etc.
● New 19-inch alloy wheel design
● 2WD has enhanced PSM as 4WD models
911 (4WD only) Carrera 4, 4S Coupé, Cabriolet, Targa4/4S
● Model specific cosmetic enhancements including classic rear red reflector strip
● Mechanical limited-slip rear diff. Now standard on: C4 /4S Coupé & Cabriolet Targa 4/S models.
● PTM (Porsche Traction Management standard).

Just to add PDK is best for gen-2 resale, but if you enjoy a manual then generally they achieve a lower sticker price.

Some posts got lost in moving this thread. I just found out that the 2010 is a three owner with the last owner having the car for just 10 months. And...it is not a CPO. It is out of warranty and I can purchase a limited warranty for about 3K asking price. Still working on the service history. I have a small "in", as my girlfriend works for this dealer group so she is talking to a guy she knows over at Porsche. ( Flemington Car and Truck)

Seems to me $40grand is strong money for an '05 with 60+K, even an S cab. The '10 is FIVE years newer, has the DFI engine, 13K LESS miles on it, it's a 4S, and they're asking only $15grand more for it. .2 MT's are fairly scarce, I dare say even scarcer in a 4S cab.

Only odd thing is the springs being replaced. Rest of it seems ok. The wing systems do give out on occasion. There may have been a software update hence the computer module checked. What's the DME look like? Do you have that? If not get it, and don't let them tell you it costs 200 dollars or they can't do it. It's a five minute job at most, and they can take a picture on a cell phone and send it to you.

I wouldnt get it unless the dealer is giving a cpo warranty, if he isnt, the car needs alot of work and he cant qualify it.

Hi Shekmark,

You don't need a Kindle to read the guide.

As long as you have a home computer/PC or iPad or Android tablet (or even a smartphone but the screen is a bit small on most phones, for best reading) then you can download the free Kindle app from Amazon. Once set-up (a quick job) you can then simply download the guide via Amazon.com.

I use my guides on an iPad and my PC, you will find it is better than a printed version due to zoom and easy navigation/ bookmarks etc, plus it's delivered instantly and is cheaper than a printed book. You can also receive free updates

What's the big deal with people thinking more than couple owners is bad?? Never understood that given that even a long term owner can treat a car very ****tily...

I know there are arguments on both sides of the fence, but a nice car is a nice car, no matter how many people have owned it.

I would go with .2 for all of the reasons listed. Plus I think the black electronics looks so much better than the gray/silver trim in .1. My 09 C4S has been bullet proof and seems to be holding value real well. .1s seem to be dropping.

As a 2005 owner, in this situation I would go with the 2010. That is way too much asking price for the 2005. Get in the $35-36 range and then the choice isn't so obvious, depending on what you want. If you get the 2005, I would just budget the IMS into it, like you plan

That is serious money for that 2005...I can be wishful prices are going up, that would make my 2007 worth a bunch!

That C4S is nicely optioned ($122.5k MSRP), price seems seems to be in the ballpark, do they have a story on why no CPO?, you'd be paying for AWD cabriolet features, is that what you're looking for?, compare to this (IMO, less desirable) porsche-dealer 65k miles $55k 2009 PDK C4S cabriolet
