Default 0w40 oil for european cars , anyone use this?

so I was over at the hardware store looking for some oil for my 88 944 N/A .
I was going to buy a bottle of 5w 30 synthetic , when i noticed beside it a bottle of 0w40 synthetic . It said for European cars , and on the back it specifically mentions Porsche .

does anyone use this , is it any better than regular synthetic , and is it any good for older cars like ours or is the European car thing referencing modern cars and not older ones . it was $15/L .

Per the manual...no zero weight and 5W limits you to freezing temps at the upper end.

I used 20w50 conventional until recently switched to 0w40 synthetic. Car ran smoother with 2-3 extra MPG but can heat up when sitting in traffic. I even noticed once a little oil burnt smoke from the engine bay once.

i am going to switch to 15w50 synthetic as it is more easily to get then 20w50 synthetic. 0w40 doesn't provide enough protection.

I run the European car formula 0W-40 in my Subaru.... Just follow the general advice for the 944. Don't need another oil thread

Mobil 1 0w-40 is an excellent oil and my first choice for winter use in cold environments in my 944. It has one of the best low temp flow rates of a commonly available oil while still being thick enough for use up to around 70f. \

I run M1 15w-50 in the summer months. 0w-40 is too thin for the hottest days in these cars.

m1 0w-40 is 1100ppm on the zinc front
m1 15w-50 is 1300ppm.

Doubtful - synthetic oils were pretty new themselves, the design of the 928 (obviously the basis of the 944 engine block) was taking place before/right around when synthetics were commercially available for widespread use. So when the oil system was designed and they were deciding what oils to specify, it's my hunch that the base case was conventional oil with additives and viscosity modifiers of the period. Modern oil has come a long way, we routinely see high mileage 944 engines in great shape internally.

i used M1 0w40 (like, 4.25 bars?) for many years with the 968 before finally swapping to M1 5w50 Rally Oel for the summers, and M1 0w50 Racing Oel (4.75 bars?) for the winters.

engine removed at 199k still had no noticable ring wear and barely lost 1/4 of a quart after 5 or 6 k miles.

but for the desert southwest i might be coaxed into the gooey stuff.

Just as a curiosity I would like to post that nearly everybody who drives 944 in Poland uses the Mobil One 5W50 which has been modified this year:
http://www.mobil1.co.uk/synthetic-en...-x1-5w-50.aspx

I got 3.6-3.75 bar at idle in normal traffic and 3 or just above if I put my foot down and got like 4-5krpm for long time on highway.

thickest i ever ran in a 968 in the winter:

Mobil 1 5W-50
Viscosity
@ 40ºC 108
@ 100ºC 17.5

thickest oil you need to run in your 968 period....

*unless you drive like an absolute maniac.

recently changed 944's oil to Castrol GTX high mileage 20W50...
supposed to have seal swellers for the perpetual leaks, as well as higher ZDDP levels than standard stuff.

also...

Viscosity @ 100C, 20.3
Viscosity @ 40C, 187.7

i'd run bunker oil if they put zinc in it.. LOL
