I have both a 2003 Boxster S and a 2008 S2K. The S2k is actually a front mid-engine car. The engine is placed behind the front axle. The Boxster has a more rear biased weight distribution. They are both great cars, you just have to drive them a little differently to get the best out of them.
I’ve owned a few s2ks... own cayman now and s2k just as fun if not more. Watch s2ks vs boosters on the ring.. they keep up and beat them all the time... I know there is a driver mod potentially but stil;... s2k is a beast.. the torsinal rigidity is amazing. Carbon fiber synchro, the top retracts faster than a boxster I believe. The engine is far more reliable as well. Forged internals and a motor that can take on just about anything. Love s2ks.
Coming from a Porsche lover, i would take the S2000 over an equivalent model year Boxster any day.
FYI, the S2000 is mid engine. As a matter of fact, the entire drivetrain is more centralized than the Boxster. The entire S2000 engine and transmission is between front and rear axles whereas the Boxster transmission hangs far behind the rear axle. And if VTEC is a gimmick, then what's Variocam? That's right, a half assed system vaguely similar but far more primitive than VTEC. Porsche eventually copied VTEC's variable valve lift by introducing Variocam Plus.
The s2k is no doubt a better car for performance . Once it goes to 987 is when the boxsters finally outperforms the Honda
That does bring up a good point. Japanese manufacturer's, once in a blue moon, make vehicles that smashes it out of the park. But then they seem to rest on their laurels and let the vehicle get old and outclassed.
