Can a modded but still street legal 993 be fun in the upper run groups. Lets say:

3.8 motor
upgraded coilovers
larger brakes
some weight loss - not crazy



My favorite Porsche of the 12 I've owned was my 993. It was street and track until I took it all the way to a full on track car. Sold it and went through Caymans, and Boxsters and currently have a 2016 GT3. The GT3 is awesome better car in every way except it has no soul and isn't any fun on the street, and dare I say too easy to drive fast at the track.

I'm giving serious thought to selling it and buying a higher mileage 993 and building a street legal - trackable toy. Something thats fun for weekend drives, could be driven 90 minutes to the track and still a hoot on track. I love the classic look and with a clean engine bay and ITBs its awesome.

My question is am I remembering 10 years ago with my 993 when 300 HP was good HP and the 993 suspension geometry was still modern-ish. With all the cup cars at DE's and club days, GT3s etc etc - is the 993 just not a doable project anymore.

Define fun - Engaging to drive, maybe not the fastest car but holds its own in the Red/Black run group.

Yes its fun. sure, you'll get passed, but so what, gives you an opportunity to try to catch people.

Build and drive what you like and don't worry about how it compares to other cars both on and off the track. There are always going to be faster and slower cars at the track. Personally I think your plan sounds like a lot of fun.

modded? don't really need to be that modded to have fun

here is from last year from summit point from advanced group. I'm letting faster guys by and then try to stay with them the best I can...of course unsuccessfully. Coming from GT3 you will have to dust off a few forgotten skills (carry momentum, look in the mirrors, get left hand ready for point by's, no electronic nanies of any sort).

car in the vid is on nt01s with rs arbs and rear tarret toe links, 10 year old street H&R coil overs and pagid pads. Since then i rebuilt LSD and added aux cooler and dialed in more camber. The car is still driven on the street.

Put a good suspension under a 993 with all the correct bits and its not only a LOT of fun to drive, but is very competitive with the water-boilers.

Naturally, engine performance can be improved to close that gap as well.

I am having a ton of fun tracking my mostly stock 993. Coilovers, sways, bucket seats, roll bar. I know a lot is driver but even with a stock non-varioram 3.6 the car surprises lots of faster cars in the corners.

I had a go in a student's 991 gt3 last weekend and, like you said OP, it was too good and kind of numb.

certainly for my driving ability, my 993 is tons of fun. While there are certainly more costly entrants than a 993, there are also more value cars as well.

How far you want to take it (993 or otherwise) depends on the depth of your pocketbook and your willingness to decrease that depth.

Steve Weiner (post #9) is a good place to start adding fun bits to your car. Lots of experience and wisdom right there. One of our most valuable Rennlist resources IMHO.

Steve steered me right in setting up my 993 with ECU flash to round out my RS cams. sure it cost me a bit, but the fun factor jumped a notch or three as well.

I can imagine what it'll feel like going from a modern GT3 to a 993, and for sure you'll find it slower. If your goal is to experience the dynamics of the car, the track, etc then for sure you can be happy and quick in a 993. If your goal is to at the front of an advanced run group, you're not likely to get there in a mildly-modded 993 without driving like showdown911 (YouTube).

I run my 993 at a couple of DE's a summer, and am loving the learning curve. My goal is to learn to drive it near its limits - and then decide if that's good enough. My experience so far has been that I'm similarly quick in corners with my run group, but way slower on the straights. I'm still pretty new at track driving - but having lots of fun. That's mission accomplished for me.
