Interesting how so many people have forgotten how well these cars were initially received.

First drives are often little more than glorified press releases, so they may not be the best resources. I know what my car is and what it isn't and don't have anything to prove. I hope none of the other forum members are too worried about their little "black sheep" Turbo.

The common negative opinion around the auto magazine world when the 996 Turbo was first released was that it was too refined and too quiet. The "too refined" normally referred to the car being too "detached" in terms of driving feel, as compared to previous 911 Turbos. I remember magazines opining that the 996 Turbo was simply a speed appliance. I agreed with their observations/opinions.

Yup, that was one of the complaints back then that some would make. It's funny because just this weekend I was talking with a new 911 Turbo (I believe a 2016) owner. We were with some friends at a restaurant and when we left he asked if he could have a look at my 6T before I took off. He loved the car and when I looked at his I said man that thing must be a rocket. His response was that yes, some days it feels like a rocket but that he feels so detached/isolated from what's going on that it really doesn't cause any excitement. He has driven/been looking at 6T's and says that to him they are much more raw and exciting to drive. I don't believe that he wants to replace the new Turbo with a 6T but rather add a 6T to use for when he really wants to have fun.
Most of the reviews from back in the day were overwhelmingly positive regarding 6T..
"In reading through all the owners' comments, one item stood out among everything else. More than half of those responding have owned previous Porsche Turbos, and the owners were in agreement: The new model (996 Turbo) is simply the best."

While I think that the 996 Turbo is an overall improvement over the 993 Turbo, there was bad 'improvement"; the "raw edges" were too smoothed out on the 996 Turbo.
In stock form, I considered my 996 Turbo to be too quiet, and too refined. But it's not that way now.

I agree, I'm a huge fan of earlier Turbos so I know what you mean. Great thing about 6T as many/all of us know is how easy it is to regain some of that rawness (if you want to) with a few tweaks here and there.
