2003 Porsche 996 X51 Race Car

Perhaps the best combination of speed, reliability, and low running costs available anywhere. Lap times are comparable to early 996 Cup cars but the reliability and maintenance costs are more similar to a street car. It has been expertly set-up, making it easy and enjoyable to drive for both the novice driver as well as the experienced club racer.

This car has been professionally maintained and cared for since it’s original build was completed in February of 2009 when it showed 66,453 miles on the donor chassis. Autometrics completed the chassis, suspension and body work (cost was $45,889) and a newly remanufactured 2005 model X51 engine was installed ($13,558) by Porsche of Hilton Head. These costs were in addition to the cost of the donor car. Current mileage shows 79,018.

Included log books detail history in PCA (GT3 class), NASA (GTS-4), PBOC (R3 class), and HSR (class seems to change every year). Noted history includes winning the NASA Texas Region GTS-4 Championship in 2010, setting the NASA GTS-4 track record at High Plains Raceway in 2011 with a 1:55.2 (a record that still stands), and placing 4th in the NASA Eastern Regionals in 2017. (had placed 2nd and 3rd in the 2 qualifying races, not bad for a car that was nearly 200lbs over its minimum allowed weight!). Shane Lewis turned a 2:18.1 in the car at Sebring for some perspective on the car's potential.

Recent maintenance includes a newly rebuilt transmission and LSD with an Albins 4.00 short ring and pinion. ($11,848). There is just 1 day on the box. After 10,00 track miles, in December 2015, the engine was dropped to perform preventative maintenance. The service included the replacement of all rubber coolant hose and the shocks were rebuilt. A new clutch, flywheel, and slave cylinder were also installed. There are a little more than 2K miles on the car since this service was performed ($12,356).

The Build:

Engine: 2005 996 X51 with 12,546 miles on it (all on track). Evolution Motorsports air box with custom built ram air intake. Plugs and O2 sensors recently replaced, just 5 days on them. X51 oil pan and fresh oil change. Car makes full power, it has consistently dyno’ed between 313 rwhp and 319 rwhp during the nearly 10 years I have owned the car. My 2017 NASA in-season dyno run produced 318 rwhp, which was tested at replicated at the track (a 1 lb adjustment to my minimum weight was made, always consistent!!) X51 headers and Coast racing mufflers.

Transmission: Newly rebuilt with Albins 4.00 ring and pinion. Newly rebuilt LSD. Cup cables and short shifter. Transmission cooler installed in nose of car, under vented bumper with switch installed in cockpit.

Brakes: 996 Cup Car calipers (6/4 piston), Giro Disc floating front rotors (brand new!), Porsche Cup Car rear rotors (3 days), and Pagid Black RS14 pads (brand new!). Factory ABS and boost. When Patrick Long drove the car he said the braking system was his favorite part of the car and the key to quick lap times.

Suspension: Moton Clubsport Shocks, Two sets of springs (750/950, currently on car and 1050/1500), 996 Cup adjustable sway bars, adjustable drop links, GT3 strut mount monoballs. Expertly set-up by Orbit Racing.

Body Work: Basically a 996 in appearance with wing, aero rockers, vented bumper, etc. The rear bumper has been trimmed on the bottom to reduce drag and the wing has been extended to the roof line. The front trunk lid, doors, and rear engine lid are all carbon fiber. Lexan front and rear windscreens. Lightweight hollowed out headlight buckets plus a set of working headlights. Car is black under orange wrap.

Aero Tweaks: There is a custom-built flat bottom with side-skirts to create additional down force. Some trick engineering that allows the car to punch above its weight. Joe Toth front splitter and canards.

Wheels & Tires: Two sets of BBS wheels, both 8.5”/10.5”, one black set and one orange set. One used set of Yokohama slicks in 240/640-18 and 280/680-18. The car was tuned for this set-up. One sticker set of Zestino racing slicks in 250/640-18 and 280/650-18. (I was going to do a tire test on this product ad never got around to it.) Both sets are mounted.

Safety and Driver Comfort: Recaro race seat recently expired and will require a back brace to be installed before it is tech’ed again. Recaro seat mounts and sliders. Window net is also ready for a refresh. Schroth enduro harnesses are current. Driver cooling system includes installed Cool Shirt box and helmet blower. Roll cage is on par with 996 Cup, built by Autometrics.

Extras: The car has been prepared to run enduros and to race at night. A second front bumper will be included with notches cut to allow for the installation of a light bar without removing the bumper. (Takes about 5 minutes to install). Light bar will be included and all wiring and cockpit switch are in place. In 2016 the car took 2nd in class and 4th overall in the inaugural HSR Sebring Classic day/night enduro.

Weight: Approximately 2,680 lbs with no driver and ending race fuel (near empty).

Known Issues: Both rear wheel wells show some damage from tire blow outs that have occurred over the years. The tape on the right rear bumper was placed there to smooth out the airflow over that seam. If I were keeping the car I would add a second bumper support to tighten up that fit and make it more secure. The right rear fender was dented in a light impact and professionally repaired back in 2009. The car has never had any meaningful contact. Right side headlight bucket is a little loose. I like to tape down the lights when I race for extra safety.

Price: $38,000. Additional spares package can be made available to the new owner at a reduced cost. Car is in Lake Worth, FL. Buyer to arrange for shipping.

that is an absurd amount of car for $38k. Aside from cars punched out to 3.8, I doubt any stock 996 cup keeps up with this machine.

It does and I do have it in the file with the build records. I never put it in my name though since as a race car there was never a need to register the car and pay insurance. Though one could if they wanted to as it is signed by the title owner.

That he is! But still down to earth enough to help me pull grass out of the front grill after I had a little off (as pictured above).

Watching him drive while sitting in the right seat is an eye opening experience!
