1998 Porsche Spec Boxster race car, street-legal, with passenger seat. Reason for selling: wanted to take friends and family for track rides, but no one will go with me! I'm returning to a formula car for racing.

Built in 2015 by The Speed Gallery, North Hollywood, CA (Dan Aspesi). They have built many Spec Boxsters, including that of Nathan Johnson, one of the fastest Spec Boxster racers on the West coast. This car is compliant with the PCA Club Racing Rules, just needs a rear tow hook.

Painted Porsche Aqua Blue Metallic with vintage graphics like a 1963 Shelby King Cobra. All white that you see is vinyl and easily removed if you don't like it.

Street legal and licensed in CA. Has cat and secondary air injection system, and passes the CA smog test. You can drive it to the track!

Not raced, only a few track days. Does have damage to right rear fender from hitting a tire wall (see photos).

The car weighs 2577 lbs with 60% fuel (9.2 gallons). Take out 7.2 gallons, or 45 lbs, and the car would weigh 2532 lbs. The minimum weight with driver is 2650 lbs., so depending on what you weigh, this car is about 65 lbs overweight. Get a lighter battery, remove the passenger seat/harness/window-net, seat sliders, cats, parking brake, radiator fan, secondary air injection system, front bumper support, and horn, and the car should make minimum weight.

All the usual upgraded stuff for a Spec Boxster according to PCA rules:

• completely stripped interior, painted flat black.
• suspension: Bilstein shocks, Swift springs, Tarrett front adjustable anti-roll bar, drop links, rear toe links, Porsche GT3 control arms, stock rear anti-roll bar.
• brakes: new solid rotors, Pagid pads (yellow front, black rear), air deflectors, stainless steel flexible lines.
• fiberglass hard top and plastic rear window, stock windshield.
• exhaust: Topspeed muffler and stock cat. Also Boxster S muffler for Laguna Seca (92 dB).
• engine: deep oil pan, under-drive pulley, A/C delete belt, larger oil/water heat exchanger.
• lightened stock flywheel, Sachs clutch.
• stock shifter with risers from Tarrett.
• large split-view rear-view mirror.
• outside cut-off switch, front tow strap.
• fire system: SPA Technique 4L/5kg, plumbed to driver (two places) and engine (two places), with outside and inside triggers.
• Momo Mod.30 300mm flat-bottom steering wheel with Rothsport quick-release.
• wheel studs.
• set of wheels: two 17x7 and two 17x8.5 Porsche “Twist” wheels, painted white.
• set of wheels: four 17x8.5 Porsche “double spoke”, lightest legal wheels, 3mm spacers on front.
• four Toyo RA1 tires 255/40, not shaved, plenty of tread left.

Unusual stuff:

• rebuilt engine by Tiger Motorsports, Canoga Park, CA. Wheel horse-power: 192, torque: 176 ft-lbs. See dyno chart below. This is with the catalytic converter still in place—you can probably get about another 5 HP if you replace this with a straight pipe.
• roll cage:
  • by Lucas Fab, Huntington Beach, CA.
  • 1.75” x 0.095” DOM, MIG-welded.
  • FIA vertical bars.
  • braces forward to the front shock towers (i.e. it's an 8-point cage).
  • knee bar under the dash with steering column support .
  • stitch-welded to windshield frame.
• passenger: Recaro fiberglass seat, Schroth Enduro HANS 6-pt harness, window net.
• driver: OMP HTE Carbon seat (2012 Dec) with head surround on sliders, Schroth Enduro HANS 6-pt harness, window net.

Does not have:

• roof net (not required for competition if you wear arm restraints).
• center net (not required with head surround seat)
• power steering cooler
• center radiator
• engine oil cooler
• transmission oil cooler
• Accusump (doesn’t help anyway)
• rear tow hook (needed)
• rear after-market anti-roll bar (has stock rear ARB, which is what you want).
• hood and trunk pins
• lightweight battery (is 38 lbs)
• semi-solid engine and transmission mounts (may reduce HP by triggering knock sensor)
• cat delete pipe
• data acquisition, video capture, or digital dash

To which class of formula car are you returning?

Formula Fords are great! I used to race an older one, a 1975 Zink Z10. It was a lot of fun. My only complaint was the work, cost, and lack of reliability of the Ford Kent engine. Now that they've moved to the Honda Fit engine and a spec slightly-less-soft tire, operational costs are way down. See my spreadsheet of operational costs for 23 classes, including FF and Spec Boxster.

A modern FF with a Fit engine would be my first choice of all existing classes.

However, I'm thinking of doing something crazy--a car that doesn't fit in any existing classes, but would have an operational cost even lower than FF. Imagine an FF with a 1-liter motorcycle engine restricted to make the same lap times as FF. ~7500 RPM, sequential shift, engine and gearbox last forever. 160 lbs lighter than an FF. Uses a tire that's a little less expensive but lasts the same and has the same grip (American Racer 133). Now put a sports-racer body on it--a little safer, and lower drag. Here's more info on the idea. It would race with the SCCA as an ASR.

Can I interest you in the Boxster anyway?

I haven't received much interest in the car. Is it the rear fender damage? Do I have to fix the fender before anyone will buy the car?

IMHO the price is on the high side even if the body was perfect. With the body damage, it is definitely priced too high. I had a SPB built so I know you probably put a fair amount of money in, but you generally will not get it back. GLWS

Here's a spreadsheet of all the possible parts for building a spec boxster in general.

Selecting the parts used in this car, it would cost about $29,000 to build this car if you did all the labor yourself (other than getting the engine rebuilt by a pro).
