Question for the more savvy, does he have to report capital gain tax???? I do not see people getting capital loss credit when selling a car for a loss, so why should he pay for a gain? Or if so, could one offset by selling another for a loss at the same time, say he had a 996 for sale?
Dealers that hold and sell cars as inventory will pay income tax at ordinary income tax rates on the gain over cost. While nondealers will pay capital gain rates (i.e. preferential tax rates) upon the sale and recognition of the gain.

I imagine the skyrocketing US prices for 4.0 RS's is partialy the result of the strong British Pound (@$1.60 to the US $1dollar), resulting in many 4.0 RS's returning to Europe.

I don't get it. It won't hold a candle to my 04 cup that they made less of. Crazy

Agree, but still nice to be able to buy a car that you drive and you get the happy surprise that instead of depreciating it appreciates. I am sure the original owners of 993 Turbos that are selling them now are enjoying selling them for same price they bought it at, specially comparing with the 996 Turbo owners. The hard part is knowing which one will appreciate (as with any investment), but there are many recent examples, ford Gt40, Ferrari F40, now the Porsche GT3RS 4.0.

As previously posted, the 4.0 in ROW spec is not legal for importation to the US. Therefore, it must undergo a full EPA/DOT conversion. The combined costs of freight, duty, bonds, fees will be in the $100-125,000 range and you will end up with a car that is not quite factory original. So, it really doesn't make sense to do this.

This 4.0L would look so good parked in my garage next to my 2.7L RS - unfortunatley the wifey wants me to buy the new house next week so funds will become a little depleted... and yes I do want to stay married.

that's insane! you need to at least get those two cars together so you can make a poster or a high-res wallpaper!

on a side note, I still remember the first time I sat in a 4.0. I went to this little strange car "Dealership" (rich dude who keeps his cars "for sale" if someone's interested) in Ft. Myers. He had a white 4.0 just sitting on the floor all dirtied up from track use.

I asked if I could sit in it and he said "no problem!" like it was nothing at all. I got in and could smell fuel and the red gear **** was almost black from all the use. Only 3k miles of probably all track duty.

Then I ran into another gentleman here in Naples, FL who has a few GT3's in his stable, one of which is also a white 4.0. These accounts were both about a year ago. After seeing this thread, I imagine I would have been even more excited to run into such a unicorn!!

It's frustrating for us car lovers with all these different rules, I got cars in both the US where I've lived for the last 5 years and in Sweden. A good original 993tt with 30000miles on it is about 150 000USD in Sweden and a 997 4.0 is like I said about 230 000USD with 3000 miles.

I would love to get my hands on a nice 993tt, but then if you export it to Europe in let say 10 years it's almost impossible to sell because it is a US spec car…………..Stupid rules
