While timing my cams for my '95 993 3.6L motor, I used a paper degree wheel and an indicator wire; however, I found it difficult to get reliable readings from it and I didn't want to risk not getting it right. I previously made the incorrect and very costly assumption that my "rebuilt" motor was timed properly and experienced some piston/valve contact damage. Long story short, I designed, prototyped, 3D printed, and assembled a kit to help me with my cam timing down to 0.1 degree accuracy. I learned that others may be interested in purchasing this kit as well so here it is for purchase.
The kits include the following parts:
- Rotary sensor (part that measures crank position to 0.1 deg accuracy)
- Stainless steel tubing for mounting
- Elbow
- 6 or 9 bolt crank adapter (or both depending on which kit you get)
- Display with display cable and battery
- Necessary thumb / set screws and nuts
- Instructions on how to use the kit (will need to find cam timing instructions for your motor yourself, but i can help with that if its the same as mine)
- I pre-assemble some components (battery, nuts, etc.) and connect the display with the rotary sensor to see that it's working. The parts may look opened but it is all new.
You will need the following parts to make it work:
-Transmission mounting stud (you should already have that)
-Factory style engine stand that doesn't block the crank to make use of the tool easier
-Your own piston dead stop indicator to find the TDC and other necessary cam timing cools (z-block, feeler gauge, dial gauge, etc.)
-Mechanical rocker (if you have hydraulic rocker, you need to use a mechanical rocker temporarily for dial gauge measurements)
The plastic used is PETG (medium to high strength plastic, more than strong enough for this application). All of the threads that the set screws and thumb screws go into have metal inserts or washers receiving the screws so no need to worry about any plastic threads wearing out. Here's a short youtube video demonstrating how the reading returns to the same value when i remove the tubing holding the sensor in place.
This means when you turn your crank 360.0 degrees, it will return to 360.0 degrees with +/- 0.1 degree or less accuracy. The accuracy of your cam timing will then be limited by how the holes line up at the cam gear (which hole you put the pin in). Although its a durable part, I still recommend treating it with care and being delicate.
The kits take about 1-3 weeks to get to you after receiving payment, depending on the backlog as well my stock on the sensor, display, display cable, and other materials needed to put this together. This is something I do on the side so it may take me a day or two to respond at times.

This is less costly than some manual professional degree wheels but will give more resolution/accuracy.

I can make crank adapters for other motors. Ideally, it'd be great if i can test fit the part in person, however, I can also get some detailed sketches/dimensions/photos from you and prototype it that way (might take a few iterations)
Finding cyl 1 tdc accurately involves use of a piston stop. Alternatively, if your heads aren't assembled, you can check tdc with a dial gauge measuring movement at the top of the exposed cylinder top/surface as well.
