Thank you for the invite to frenzy. I have a few friends in that region and would love to go, but I think it is unlikely. #1 was on the road for about 4 days before PVGP, I managed to get about 100 miles on it before we transported it to Pittsburgh, then logged about another 100 during PVGP week with a number of small cable tie and bailing wire repairs while there. The spirit of the 928 development team (both living and passed) followed me around all week and arranged things (what we call luck on our planet) to keep #1 going and in attendance at all events...Thanks guys!
So the car is currently in no condition to be making 600 mile trips under its own power, it requires significant mechanical maintenance before I would be comfortable on a trip like that. Work is going to begin on the car as soon as I decide what to do, how much to do, and in what order.
Andrew, if you need enclosed transport, my trailer is oftentimes available and there is an Enterprise truck rental across the river in Old Saybrook. Plenty of room inside the trailer for a 928.
Shifting gears into research mode. While there is a known but relatively uneventful ownership history after Porsche (1979 to present) the time at Porsche remains shrouded in mystery. In response to a previous owners inquiry, Porsche has stated in writing that they sold the car in 1979. No date or month was given other than "1979." The only confirmed (by tag number) photos of the car are during the press launch in France (February and March 1977) and the June of '77 Car and Driver photos were taken at the press launch. As of this writing I have no confirmed photos or information on the car's location or use by Porsche from April 1977 to its sale sometime in 1979.
Knowns:
The first 4 press cars were white (S-CX 2132, 2133, 2134, 2135)
As it turns out the rear wiper configurations provide one of the few visual queues outside of the license plates:
2132 had provision for rear wiper (plugged holes in hatch)
2133 has unknown rear wiper configuration
2134 had a provision for rear wiper (plugged holes in hatch)
2135 had no provision for rear wiper (no holes in hatch)

A white press car with a temporary license plate and rear wiper (but with metal expansion tank) shows up in an Australian magazine in august 1977:

So, not much to go on so far, what was #1 doing while in possession of the Porsche Factory from march of 1977 to 1979? Possibilities include: Sitting somewhere doing nothing, Executive use, testing and abuse, all of the above.
As a teaser (to me and everyone else) is the note scrawled in large handwriting on top of the headliner board. This note was written in the same pink crayon and handwriting as other notations found inside of interior panels, faded and difficult to capture in a photograph but photoshop brings it to life:

That little VIN plate generates lots of buzz and interest, I made some great connections at PVGP that may lead right into the factory archives. This story is just starting.

1) Am I hallucinating or is there no heater box installed in the dash? I'm probably hallucinating.
2) Never seen that configuration of the aux air valve hose routing before. Interesting.
3) Unique upper airbox molding- very pronounced 'gutters' for the straps.
3) Not sure if it's the same, but the Behr sticker on the radiator looks like one I've seen in Mark's inventory before. I'd be happy to replicate it if anyone would like one.

1. the heater box is there, you can see the rubber boot sticking up and the heater fan motor.
2. Aux valve bracket and hoses are like that on very early cars, #1 and my #24 are that way

SO much going on in that engine shot. The air intake hoses have no rubber boot for timing cover vents. So cool to see these preproduction cars.
I would guess that your investigation may reveal Mr Turgler to be an employee at Porsche. Someone who was probably waiting on that headliner. Just a guess ....
Have you reached out to the factory yet? I am curious if they would be able to tell you about the car's history or not.
I'm in the process...the "official channel" for all inquiries from north America is Porsche North America, and their COA, and It is limited. Other information has trickled in from 928 Classics' efforts over the years...some of that factory information can be confusing. The access to and organization of the factory data from that long ago is not exactly straightforward.

#6 was fitted with production stickers on the radiator (possibly late Porsche weeks ownership).
However, I'd like to return to original build, which had only the rad p/n and Behr sticker.
