Default Brake pressure in a 986/ 2004 Boxster S?

Matt or Peter,

I was over at Speed Sport Tuning today talking with Spencer. I bought Jim Clemens 2004 Boxster S F class car, but he took out his AIM stuff. SST installed a CAN plug for my Solo DL so I have some basic data until I decide which system to buy.

Anyways, Spencer said the Solo DL can not get brake pressure in this particular car as currently configured. Is that correct? Is there some other part needed to get brake pressure? Would a MXS Dash get brake pressure? Can the pedal position be applied to the brake pedal?

Thanks as always!

Joe

Joe, with a CAN connection, you get brake position (off/on), throttle position, engine RPM and coolant temperature. Porsche 996 template.

To get brake pressure, you will need an EVO4S/EVO5/MXL2/MXS/MXG and a brake pressure sensor.

I think for now, you should have Spencer (or yourself) calibrate the Solo DL's internal accelerometers after it is in place in the car.

Also, I have a couple of years of data with Jim in that car so there is that... may have a used MXG and sensors that would fit that car, too. Save some money!

Peter, Thanks! I will absolutely buy a used MXG if you have one, just shoot me an email. I do need to be considerate of SST as they are AIM retailers and want badly to sell me a dash setup. Clearly though I need to setup another day of coaching this time at the Glen.

Thanks so much for always always being there! You are truly amazing!!

My pleasure, Joe. I'm glad that Spencer is there for you. And many of the shops that Jerry, Matt and I have sold to are now dealers themselves. Like they know the cars, we know the equipment and how best to use it. We ARE specialists, like they are!

I believe in your approach, and I know that with objectively collected and examined information, you WILL get to where you want to be.

Joe - a brake pressure sensor is a cheap and very useful thing to add once you are set on which system you are going to use. I actually find it to be the most useful parameter in additional to throttle pedal position. There are some good prices on used AIM Pista dashes as well out there. Gen I Smartycams can be had for as low as $250 bucks!

IMHO, you have one of best educated and hardest working shop owners behind you and should utilize them as much as possible. Spencer works very hard at learning and tuning his cars. The data and time he has spent developing his skills as a data guy and driver is immense. Spencer's help and support will far outway any savings you could have gotten on a used system.

Joe

Here is a way to use your Accelerometer in the SOLO DL to effectively show brake pressure. You build a math channel in AIM analysis. I have written a tutorial about how to do it. The document is here: http://austinmotorsportsllc.com/docu...ce-information.

This shows the data before and after the math channel is used:

Thank yo Jerry - this is very cool!! All I had to do is make the Long_Acc negative. Some examples between actual and calculated from WGI:

Missed that tutorial at first. Thanks Jerry! The computer I'm using at this moment doesn't have Word so I'll get to the tutorial on another computer but for now I tried inverting the LongG and setting the min to 0 and this is what I got. Not bad! Thanks Frank! I don't know what I like more - geeking around with data or actually racing - JK!!

Remember that the GPS data only refreshes at 10Hz. A lot can change in a hard brake zone in 1/10 sec, but the graphs from longitudinal accel are still very usefull. As far as the brake proflie goes, I like to share this document from Optimum G. http://www.optimumg.com/docs/Brake_tech_tip.pdf

Here is the important piece:
