Is it an M44/11 or M44/12 block ?

Well just checked my current motor (the one with slots that may or may not be ports...). Unfortunately, the codes are virtually all machined away (head gasket anyone?), so I can't make out if it was originally an 11 or 12.

Separately the block on the engine stand (with confirmed oval ports) is not stamped with either as it turns out. I had looked and thought it was 12 but on closer inspection and cleaning, it is very clearly marked "M44 KF" on the rear deck landing area. No idea what KF is -- replacement block maybe? Motor came out of an '89 with about 90k miles said the seller. The sides of the block is marked 944.101.112.4R and 0151/1. I assume the .4R means it's the 4th casting version (so probably later) but that's just speculation.

Drain the oil and try a fibre optic camera through the sump drain hole or level sensor hole for a look maybe ?

I finally took photos. I'm pretty sure this question has been answered now.

Voith I will trade my one 2.7 block with rusty crankshaft and stuff for your #2 2.7 bare block. And if you want the spider that's in the crankcase area you can have it too. It's big and black and looks aggressive. I'll even throw in a 2.5 turbo block with the other spiders sibling in it as well with badly scored cylinder walls from a rod bearing disintegration event. And I'm just giving these deals for me away to anyone that has something I want but can't afford. Not a problem, anytime. Oh yea you got the shipping right? Your kinda on the other side of the world and it states above in my deal that it's "deals for me". Just following my rules I made just now. I also accept donations of super rare items, you bet they are always welcome. Have a good day everyone.

Good offer but shipping would kill us. We can swap nice pictures instead. Let's see that spider!

That pretty huge black widow is hidding because the sun is out. Just wait. I'll catch her one day. I seen her take off. But here is a real nice clean block with that super clean 2.5L block in the background, as well as a 5P transaxle and a big old international 392 4barrel v8. It's too heavy for the 944 unfortunately.

Real clean setup. One day in the future, not more then one thou.
