Default Headlight upgrades - another question

So I've been through a bunch the headlamp upgrade threads. As much as I would like to install a set modern headlamps in my 964 I can't get past the aesthetics of bug eye look, just does not work for me. It seems like there are two options if you want to keep the old school look:
1. Install LED bulbs into existing H5 housing - cheap and fast but the reflector design in H5 is so bad seems like this a band-aid approach.
2. Install H4's along with new wiring and relays - I've owned many set of H4's in older 911's - with the proper bulbs they work pretty well.

Any other approaches?

Thanks,

Phil

I've upgraded both of mine to H4s, relays and high wattage bulbs. I'm very happy. I'm curious to see what others suggest.

I like the OEM look of the H4 housings and lenses but I wanted more light output during daytime driving in order to be seen (I don't drive much at night, before people start commenting that my light pattern is illegal or blinding other drivers) so I swapped out the H5's for Euro H4's and installed Cyclops Adventure Sports 3800 lumen H4 LED bulbs without new wiring nor relays.

The LED's draw very little power so I didn't think the wiring and relay upgrade was necessary. I have the RS single pulley mod so I like having less draw on my electrical system. If the next owner wants to install halogen bulbs, that is still an option. On the few occasions I have driven after dark, the light output is impressive.

Can anyone report on using aftermarket LED bulbs in the H5 housings?

Yes, theres a 10+ page long thread discussing it. Should come up on a quick search for "H5 LED" or similar.

You can also do the xenon lights with finned glass lenses to get more light but with a vintage look

i went though the same thought process and ended up with h4, relays and brighter bulbs. Keeps the esthetics and light output is way better.

Does anyone know why Porsche equipped late 3.2s and 964s with H5s instead of H4s?

H4's were never legal in the US. H5's are. Prior to this sealed beam headlights were installed.

I have several sets of H1's and H4's. I use the H1's on my C2. They were never legal in the US either and have dual filaments. For what they cost no doubt the LED upgrades are cheaper but I really like the look and the light the H1's produce.

This is what I have, DOT approved LED inserts in H4 housing.
