Non Roof Ski Rack
This is not a 996 specific post but there does not seem to be a general 911 forum with wide viewership. I remember when I was younger seeing 911s with a ski rack that mounted on the rear of the car around the engine compartment. I would think that this mean it works on a convertible. I did a google search and did not find a pic. Am I crazy (or getting old) or does somebody else remember it as well?

I've seen racks like you talk about on the 356/911/912, but I don't think I've seen it on anything newer.
I wouldn't think that would work on any model with the automatic wing (when did that come about?).
Does the hard top for the 996 cab have the roof rack mount points built into it like the coupe?

Mine was originally a Florida car and had the hardtop delete according to the options list. Even if I could not use it, would love to see a pic of the rack if anybody has one.

Hmmm... "porsche 911 cargo rack" might have been a good Google search to start with
Also saw a few 986s like this which suggests there might be something similar for the 996 cab?

I did do a google search first and none of the results you have showed matched what I remember seeing. It was one or two pieces that held the skis at about a 45 degree angle with the mount near the engine compartment.

Assuming you have a 996 cab, I don't see how anything mounted on the deck lid would work do to the spoiler as gnat pointed out. Have you thought about a willwood-style hitch set up? You could then use a vertical hitch mounted ski carrier.

But, yeah, there do seem to be less pics of that as the majority show up on the roof.

I carried skis/snowboards on a roof rack once. They all required a ridiculously expensive slope side waxing after the drive (and that was after we waxed them all prior to departure). No they either ride inside or in a cargo box so they stay protected from road mess.

The one I remember was a two ski rack that mounted on one side of the rear of the car. It maybe very likely that the rear spoiler would not allow the use of this rack on the water cooled cars.

This might work since you can attach one set of suction cups to the rear glass and another to the body behind the rear glass:
