Help Needed with Shifter ****
I'm trying to replace my stock shifter with my newly purchased Function First 997 shifter but having trouble removing the shift ****. According to the 101 Projects for your 911 book some cars have a set screw while for others you need to twist the lower collar 90 degrees and lift. Pretty sure mine does not have a set screw, but I cannot get the lower collar to twist. Any ideas? Some pics of my shifter and the lower collar...

Put it in neutral. Grab the **** with both hands. Pull up (toward the roof). HARD. Don't punch yourself. Right about the time you think "there's no way it's on there this tight," it will come free.
And you will punch yourself.
Sometimes I brace my forearm across my knee to get enough leverage to pop that sucker off. The additional control helps reduce the odds of punching myself.

If you grab the **** hard, you're working against yourself because the shift **** is just gonna grab the shaft tighter the tighter you grab it. What works well for me is use a large adjustable wrench (open it till it can slot onto the shifter shaft) and slide in UNDER the shift **** and pull the wrench straight up. Be careful knocking yourself in the face though.

I was gonna do this before spring to touch up the leather a bit. The big take away for me is "dont punch yourself". I wonder if theres a thread... 'who punched themselves when pulling shift **** off'.

Sounds like it's the same setup as my old E46 M3. Pull **** up hard - everyone says they get punched in the face, but I was like. no not, me. Guess what, I did get punched in the face.

Heh. It's not just you. When I wrote "Grab your **** with both hands," I immediately reverted to 12 years old and 6th grade.

I'm just going to wear my full-face helmet from now on when removing the shifter boot and ****. This should be added to the materials list for the DIY: "Parts required: Helmet (Snell 2015 or DOT equivalent)

Thanks for putting me in the hospital. I didn't know you were talking about a stick shift in a car. No worries, I'll recover in time.

Use a second person to help pull it off makes it a lot easier.
Sit in the drivers seat and get someone in the passengers seat and pull up at the same time.
