928s for Sale

I'd say don't do that. No reserve cars over there seem to go for less. You were asking $16K. IMO a no reserve for a high mileage automatic with all the custom mods you did may not bring over $10k. The buyers looking to get into 928s are paying a premium for original cars. Unless you have the original steering wheel, rims, radio, shifter, etc. that you can replace the mods with, I'd say hold on to it. My guess is the reason you have had no luck is the same. Customization is fine except when it comes to selling your car. No one wants to buy someone else's vision. I'd suggest replacing all the aftermarket bits and put it up for sale on BaT in the summer when the feeding frenzy on 928s is in full swing again. Plus if they are selling one a week like last year, the likelihood of them allowing you to have a reserve should be higher.

Well I paid $14K for all those mods because, you know, I liked the mods at the time. I didn't actually do any of them, and being dumb I didn't realize they detracted from the value. I've come to realize that $16K may be a mirage with this car. But under $10K would totally suck, but if that's the way the market rolls then that's life. So much for the "skyrocketing" values of the 928. My car has gone from $14K to under $10K in under 30,000 miles.
So I guess what I'm saying is, I am selling this car *as is* even if it's for $1.
And wait a second -- that $26,000 1990 that sold had aftermarket wheels on it. Who wants an original radio from 1988? Basically it's all changed in the past 6 years like I've been saying. In 2010, folks like me would buy a 928 because it was the fastest $15,000 car money could buy and it was awesome, especially with various mods and upgrades to help it pretend to be a modern car. Now, it's all this purist crap, because there's all kinds of other vehicles that will blow its doors off for $15,000 I guess. Although I can't think what they are off the top of my head.

I didn't even know your car was for sale, and I was in the market for one. Beyond the post on this thread, create a thread in the Vehicle Marketplace. You're liable to get more views that way than buried in a 117 page thread. Link it here, but you need to get visibility.
And I second the points brought up by others. I wouldn't list it as no reserve unless you'll be happy just being done with it, regardless of price.

89 S4 - Windsor
No affiliation. I did chat with the owner, he has had it for 15 years but has done almost no maintenance and sitting un-used for the last few years. Repainted when he purchased, but it sounds like a 10 footer (only masked and sprayed). WP0JB0925KS860244

Still might be a good deal for someone from the US as the car is originally from Florida and is just across the river in Windsor. But no more than 10k CDN IMO.

You are right about that '90 S4. Non-original rims and radio, automatic and 150K. Very close to your car in that regard. From what I could tell from the photos, your car's interior is really nice and all the big maintenance items are up to date. I think it is worth more than $10K. But my observation over at BaT has been that No Reserve cars sell for less than their reserve counter parts. Do a search of past auctions and look at the reserve not met prices. Most of them are considerably under what one might guess the reserve was.
So it's a risk. I could be completely wrong and you could find that 2 people want your car really bad and bid themselves up even beyond $16K. But if it were me I'd at least wait until the movement on 928s picks up over there, which should be around springtime.

Wait...
Are those original tires, new old stock or did they do a run of P7's and I missed the boat?
I find your posts very interesting since it's such a different view from my own, not better or worse, just different.
I do not know anyone personally that bought a 928 at any time because it was the fastest or even the overall performance compared to other cars. I know some people who bought 928's that were only a couple years old back in the early 80's. We all bought 928's simply because we like them and they are great cars. I remember when a family friend bought a 78/79 in the early 80's. That was the car which steered my father away from 911's and into 928's..... after 3 decades of owning Corvettes.
Point is, if anything changed it's an appreciation for the older 928's. For the longest time anyone driving around a 16V non-Euro was tagged with a label: "Well, too bad you cannot afford a 32V"
People who own 85/86 cars were looked at as "Too bad you couldn't afford an S4"
...and so on
Some of us have known the beauty and joy of driving an early car for many years (going on 25 years with my 81). To call this attitude "crap" is a bit ignorant.
To chalk this attitude up to simply a performance shift is nonsense. If such things were the case than nobody would ever pay six figures for a vintage Corvette. Even the best L88 will get spanked by most modern cars much less Corvettes costing significantly less.
Many of us simply appreciate these cars for what they are. If I wanted something faster I could have, at any point, bought something else for less than what I have into my 928's.
This shift is not widespread either. Some of my non-Rennlist 928 friends do not understand why I sink any amount of money into these older cars when I could buy a faster S4.......
To each its own I guess. I do not care if the car in the next lane is faster....well that is not 100% true. If I'm at the drag strip in a supercharged 928 I care a little.

I too believe that owning a pure collectible car can be a great thing, from any vintage, and it is not just about performance.
To try to explain my attitude, what I always look for is an older, distinctive car, that is also high-performance and awesome looking, and has more than 2 seats. Then I use it as my daily driver and my only car. In 2010, my 928 fit the bill at the price point I could afford. And it helped that it had been my dream car from the 1980s like the rest of us.
Now, however, the S4s are simply too old to be really practical in this application. They have to be kept aside for high days and holidays, I feel. And in this application, they also have come to feel very very old-fashioned. So now at this $20,000-ish price point I could afford a number of "modern" (like, early 21st century) cars that suit my needs more, and maybe a lot of other folks who would have bought a 928 6 years ago are in a similar position so they won't buy a 928 today.
