Derek Bell raced both cars at willow springs raceway and said " after driving
the turboS the 911 felt like it had a flat tire. The turboS beat the 911 turbo by about 2 seconds at the track with Bell driving both cars
There are loads of really slow drivers on the ring, especially Porsche drivers, boxsters, caymans and 911s.
You can pass them even with a van engine
That's gotta be the Ultimate achievement ?
Beating other Sportscars in a van, or a Van engine car!
I get the "Van" gags all the time, I don't mind them at all probably because I haven't got a Van engine but also because they think my 924 is much slower than they think!
I don't mind the van gags even though I have two cars with "van" engines. I'm proud of that but I also respect the non van engined Porsches for what they are and I try to be realistic when it comes to compare the van engine to the non van engine. But the van engine thing goes to show that in the real world you can get the same amount of fun while being more cost effective and using a simpler design.
As one example:
In 2014 I organized a small coffee & drive event, two more cars showed up. A 951 and an early 924. We took some mountain twisty roads with some high speed portions as well.
In the real world, where you're not pushing the car to its limits but you're still driving sporty, the naturally aspirated van engine held up well with the turbocharged van engine and with the turbocharged non van engine. Needless to say the guy had the same amount of fun in his simple van engine as the 951 guy did or as I did driving the GTS wannabe.
I paid roughly 30-35k for my car, the 951 guy also paid more than 10-15k while the van engine was 5k. Who got the most fun for his money? who dared to push his car the most?

Sure the car on the right get's driven flat out and on it's "Door handles", the old tiny car from the 1980's on the left does not get thrashed no where near as Hard, because it doesn't need to it's far more competent and capable of much more but this is too risky on public roads.
I love driving the Daily Estate wagon hard against many sports car's because it' takes so much more skill and risk to keep up with faster cars. and it's worth $800 and not $40,000 !
These "Loons" on the Ring are crazy, i'd never consider driving anything that fast unless it was fully cages, I'd had lots of practice and it was a organised run and not an Open Pit lane! with anyone on there, especially bikes!
