Default Motor mount height and movement question

Hi everyone. I took out the motor mounts out to see if they could be visibly checked for needing replacement. Based off another post from the forum, it looks like mine aree warn well. I will poat a picture and maybe you can help me with this.

A question I have is: Should the center shaft of the motor mount (not sure what it is really called. It is the metal shaft that the bottom bolt connects to) be able to move around by hand? I can move it side to side by hand. Here is a picture of one of my mounts..

The cost to replace is not too high, and if your mounts are original, they are probably in need of replacement. I just replaced mine and saw a noticeable change in the height of the engine, visible via the tailpipes compared to bumper, and a reduction in vibrations in the cabin.

I took the approach to measurement mine with the engine hanging on them, thinking that there would be some sort of wear limit, but I can't find any information either, so interested in what you find out.

you went to the trouble of removing the old ones then I would replace them if you have no proof that they have been replaced. Easy DIY job.

Thanks for some responses.

Yes, I ordered new mounts in any case. This is not the only 996 in the family. I was just curious as to whether the height of the rubber looked large enough to be considered warn down...but also, I can move the center bolt stud all around with my hands...I didn't know if it should be that easy to move around.

Anyway, I ordered new ones last night.

Unless a 996 has miles under 50k motor mount replacement is almost a certain need.

Ok, my 2000 has 60 k on it. Which motor mounts should I get? The car is rarely tracked.

I am hoping to replace mine as well. Any suggestions out there?

Get the OEM replacements from someplace like Paragon or Pelican. Mine were Rine I think. You don't need to upgrade unless you are going to track the car. Pretty easy DIY too.

I can't remember if there was play in my old ones, but I did measure them. The rubber on the new, genuine Porsche mount came out 3/8". Rubber on my old worn out one was sticking out about 9/16". Visually it looks like yours could use replacement.

Cheers
