What is the deal with the porsche euro plates?
9 times out of 10 when I see a picture of the new porsches - either the 997 turbo, cayman etc, the license plate says something like S-GO-blah blah blah? What is the significance of S-GO? Im sure you porsche-o-philes know the history of this.... Ive seen it online, in Excellence - its everywhere!

Plates in Germany begin with the letter of the city that issued the plate, S would be Stuttgart. I'm not sure whether the GO has any significance, but likely.

I think that stands for temporary plate. I have one of the original ones from a car that was a brought over to the states. My plate were used to transport the car from the factory to the shipping dock. (A porsche of course)

first Letter is the name of the city: S would be Stuttgart. The other letters, could be one or two, are usually random but can be selected by the owner for an additional fee. this is also the case for the digits. at the end of the plate you see sometimes add. numbers like 03 09. That means the car has a registration from March to September. By the way LA is Landshut (is next to Munich).

Yes, the S is for Stuttgart, and I would expect that Porsche arranged a block of plates starting with "GO" for their press/photo pool cars. They also have (at least they USED to have) a bunch of plates with "PR" on them too. I used to see "S:EX 123" plates there sometimes, but not recently. They may have cancelled those. Another fun one was "Fu:CK 123" from either Fulda or Furth......

I don't like 996 cars, though I have owned three of them (don't ask me why), but I think all the factory brochures have pictures of 996 cars with euro plates to disguise the ugly front, especially when Porsche made the change MY2002, man those fronts have no character! I think they must have hired someone from the Honda design team back about 1999 ...at any rate, I ordered custom plates from http://www.grtpl8s.com/ a few years ago and had a favorable experience...but you have to buy the official registration stickers elsewhere.

The "GO" on the Porsche plate after S for Stuttgart stands for "Geschäftsbereich Oeffentlichkeitsarbeit". Which basically means it's a press vehicle. There's also a S-"VM" plate which stands probably for "Vermarktung" and means it's a car for marketing purposes. There's also VS and I have no idea what thats for. Pretty organized these germans
