Default Evolution of the 911 turbo into a GT car

As the 911 turbo continues to evolve to meet the demands of Porsche's target market, many people on this board have argued that it has become too big, too heavy, too luxurious, and simply too much of a GT car. Heck, you can't even get one with a manual transmission.

I love my 997 turbo, but I will most likely own a 991 turbo in the future. As I think about the 991 turbo and what it has become, it makes me wonder if I should consider other GT cabriolets. The one that I keep coming back to over and over again is the Jaguar F-Type R. It's also now available as an F-Type SVR. The R has 550 HP, and it's AWD. The SVR bumps the power up to 575 HP and gives it more aggressive trim and standard carbon ceramic brakes.

The F-Type is a sexy looking vehicle, no doubt. The exhaust note is intoxicating. It hits 0 - 60 in the low 3 second range, despite having a ZF 8-speed automatic as opposed to a dual clutch transmission like PDK.

Is it big, fat and heavy? Yes. Is it luxurious and fast? Yes. But here's the good part: it's about 60% of the price of a similarly equipped 911 turbo. That's lots of juice for that kind of cash.

My question to this group is: would any of you consider an F-Type R instead of your next 911 turbo? I could buy a brand new F-Type R, built to my specifications, for the same price as a 911 turbo that is a few years old. I'm not saying that I'm going to do this, but it sure is tempting.

I watched Top Gear episode 5 last night, and the piece on the SVR - it definitely made me think twice about what my next car will be. Looked very capable, and had the trimmings of a top end GT.

The trouble is, I don't like the lines of many of the current gen cars, Jag and Porsche included. For me, the next logical upgrade would be to a late 997.2 Turbo S.

The jag is a beautiful car.

The exhaust is way overdone to me and quite artificial. Interior styling is nice, quality is crap.

Reliability is dodgy.

I'd like to drive a Jag occasionally, but I don't think I'd ever choose one over a 911.

The exhaust is a bit over the top, but the dirty side of me kinda likes it....

I share your concerns about reliability and quality, although reports indicate that they have vastly improved in those areas.

I tend to flirt with the idea of other brands from time to time, but I always seem to come back to Porsche. I was convinced that I would be buying a Lotus Evora S a few years ago, but that never happened. The sexy lines and the 550 HP of the Jag just got me thinking....

my buddy got one for his wife, S version V8. It's pretty incredible, can't imagine what the R is like. You get the CF interior finishes you may not think it's that cheap. But wish it had a manual.

Like all Jags, wait a few years and pick one up cheap. They have just about the worst depreciation of any automaker.

I think it was the R, not SVR, but the professional comparisons seem to show the 991 Turbo looking like a GT3 when placed on a track next to the Jag. That wouldn't keep me from looking at one, though, as they are nice looking. I wouldn't buy new, like mentioned above.

Something about the Jag F-Type proportions doesn't appeal to me. I'd rather choose between a 911 Turbo S or an Aston Martin Vantage

+++ and it would still be the TT. But Vantage a close call.

Rode a couple hours as passenger in a bud's F Type R.

Nowhere near the performance of the TT, 2 less seats, makes a lot of fun noise but not the performance to match.

But agree, the price difference is significant, just not to me.

I had a 2013 Vantage before my 2009 997TT ..... Sexy car (as is the Jag) but all show and no go .... Now the Vantage V12 ---- thats a different story ... One fast little car

I like the Jag... but I like my Pcars much better ...
