Default Spark Plugs - Nickel Chromium vs Iridium

2009 C2S 101K miles

I just did the spark plugs on my wife's L2008 Lexus IS250 this weekend at 60K miles and put in Toyota Denso Iridium spark plugs. A super fiddly job as you have to remove the top air / gas delivery plenum and the Japanese hid some screws just for laughs. This got me thinking.... the plugs that its.

Why ...

1 - Iridium for Toyota, and Nickle Chromium for Bosch? (Bosch does have a line of iridium plugs btw)

2 - Why the different tip designs... see below?

Given that plugs are not a differentiator in consumer car buying decisions, and that plugs have been around for over 100 years, you would think the industry would have converged on an optimal design... or at least just a few for various applications. What gives?

Peace

I am going to throw what little knowledge I have of spark plugs into the mix. There are compromises. The rare earths are going to get you longevity with decent energy conductance. The coppers, what Porsche recommends, will be consumed (the electrode) quicker, but you will get more energy to create a better spark. Is it a big enough difference to feel? I have no clue, but that is my recollection of the metals.

Not sure but I think Iridium plugs last longer. I swapped the plugs out on my Toyota 4Runner last year - 4.7L V8. Iridium Denso plugs. 120K mile factory interval!

can you imagine howit would be if the spark plugs in your porsche stayed there for 120k miles? they would be stucj there considering porsche dont really travel get used as much as toyotas. 120k miles on a toyota 6years, for a porsche forever!

I suppose that depends entirely upon who owns each one. At this rate it will only take me 6 years to accumulate 120k miles on my 911.

Well the Lexus plug change interval is 60K miles.... so much for iridium or Toyota long life. At 60, they didn't look nearly as good as my Bosch plugs both at 40 and 80K interval.... don't know if that means anything, but...

At 115K the plugs in my 4runner looked fine... Depends on the engine, I guess. It's a 4.7L V8 but it's only rated at 230hp. It lives a relatively sedate and lazy life.
