I have a 991 C2, live in Minnesota, and drive all year round. I have the factory 19" winter wheel set that I put on mid-November, the car drives great in the snow. I do a once a week car wash with the undercarriage wash, no problems. I also have two daughters, 10 and 12, they fit in the back perfectly, and with a little bit of coaching they can get in and out of the back with boots on without hitting the door sill or the back of the seat (winter mats in the back). I did the same thing with my base 997, same deal, works great in the snow.
C2 is a great all weather winter car!
I'd say your profile is a close to mine as you can get. I'm leaning towards the C4 though. Any reason you went for a C2? My dealer says of the 16 cars they have delivered here this year, 2 were C2S and the balance were C4/C4S. He thinks I should go the C4 route based on what is selling here. He said they didn't deliver any C2 coupes.
I've owned a 996 C2, a 997 C4 and now a 991.2 C4. The 996 and 997 both did well in Chicago winters as daily drivers with dedicated snow tires. The problem is depth of snow, not traction. I'd be hesitant to go back to a C2 however. Subjectively, the C4 handles snow better.
My kids are now 21 and 16, but I've used my car to carpool the kids and their friends on numerous occasions during my 15+ years of 911 ownership. Not ideal, but doable.
It's not the snow.
It's not the cold.
It's the salt.
That stops me.
Plus, I have many other winter time hobbies.
Not just salt, but the rocks, gravel, etc that is mixed in with it.
Not only does it tear up the paint and undercarriage, it also pits the headlights and windshield all to heck.
I'm in Ontario Canada and drive my C2 all year round and love it. I put a sandbag in the front trunk for added weight.
If I were to have a choice I'd go C4 but such a good deal on my C2 made me go that route.
Superb still...
Thanks Cam. I think I'm going to get a C4. It gives me the most flexibility plus I like the look of the wider rear end. It will be delivered in the spring and I'll drive it into early winter and see how its working out. If I find it too difficult for the kids or we have two many deep snow days, I'll pick up something like a Subaru XV and park the 911 on the bad days.
The dealer says the C4 is in greater demand in my market and in any event he says even if I don't drive it in the snow, it wouldn't have been a waste as the car is a bit more "planted" than the C2 and the suspension setup is a bit different and he thought the car rode a bit better. Not sure about the ride part but I think there is some added value in the C4 even if I don't end up driving it right through the winter. Now to decide between GT Silver and White.

Exactly. Up here, what abuse that would be. Salt, sand, idiot drivers, ice chunks dropping from trucks, starting it when it's -10, low ground clearance. Not a chance.
Besides, I put it away clean under a nice soft cover, and around April 1, it's like opening a present.
It has been a few years, but I snapped a picture of a C4 pulling a Jeep Grand Cherokee out of a snow bank. It was after a good day of skiing up at Bridger Bowel, and plenty of people stopped to offer encouragement. Don't remember how they attached the rope, but it got the job done.

C4s all-year daily driver in the north shore of Chicago... I use michelin Alpin's on the 20" wheels - just swap tires, not rims... Never had a problem... I don't think the 40k vs 60k miles 6 or 7 years out will really impact the value by a meaningful amount... As long as you take care of it - always washed/waxed, undercarriage cleaning (I like steam), etc you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between it and a spring/summer only car...
good winter tires and voila--snowmobile--n.b. clearance can be an issue--
