Default 78 spare tire cover position

Is this correct? I've seen this positioning of the cover above the foam pad twice now.

Seems strange to me, but understand the need of some padding below...since the spare has no hold-down specifically. Just looks goofy and really can't grasp why they didn't just add foam under the cover and leave the matching black foam above.

Anyhow, if it is correct...it's correct. Would just like clarification.

Thank you,

Brian.

Brian

I have two of these covers, both the same way. One is from my 79, the other was from an 80 Euro.

below the foam is correct. The cover will eventually crack if you jam it on top of the pad.

Guy, would you mind verifying for me that there is a difference in your two Spare Covers in regard to the way they latch in? I know that the 78 and 79 latch the way the 78 is shown above, but I am not sure if the 80 is when they changed and put the latch on the car rather than on the Cover, as with the 78/79s.

The simple question is how does the 80 Cover latch in? Thanks.

Brian, I would do it the way Ed suggests with the Black foam on top of the cover. However, if there is too much space under it and on top of the spare, I suggest that you put some other foam under the cover and on top of the spare (and whatever else you have under it inside the spare). I didn't realize that the 78 does not have a hold down stud and plate for the spare.

Just double checked, both covers are identical and have the metal latch on the cover.

I always thought the pad should be on top but on my two, clearly the pad has been installed under the cover for many years. Its part of the cover now

The pad was originally under the cover. Ed's right though, it is a tough fit with eve variances, etc.
