928 - 78 - #225 Muffler and Tailpipe Tips?
Getting ready to paint my 78's muffler and tailpipe cover...and was wondering if the tailpipe tips should be black or shined-up exhaust pipe?
Rob-the-master-of-information shared a picture with me that he received a while back...and it shows them painted black. But, my mind says they should be just shiny exhaust pipe. Granted, so many things have happen to a lot of these cars over the years...folks can be pretty handy with a rattle can. Although, the picture Rob shared was a restoration type paint job.
Thank you, for any advice...well, thank you...for any good advice...the bad stuff I can do without...I get enough of that from myself...lol.

The tips on a '78 muffler are 928 111 271 01, used 78-86. 271 01 supercedes to 271 04, which happens to be the same number as the supercession for the 271 03 found on 90-95 cars. Pretty sure they're all painted black.
Here's Minerva's original muffler, FWIW.
The tips look awfully similar to those on my GTS's muffler:

the only chrome on a 928 was the door lock bezels on very early cars and the USA chromed plastic headlight filler rings to fit sealed beam lights......the black exhaust tips are standard just not sure it was simply paint.

True- if it is paint, it's the toughest paint that ever was. Maybe it's anodizing, or black oxide, or ??? Not sure.

Rick (Wyatt's ride) painted his and they look great, even after a season or two of driving.

This is my rear mufler with - yes - chrome tips. If I understand correctly this is not original. So is this an aftermarket rear mufler that is not standard to this car? 1978 MY 1979
OK, so the heat shield is made out of SS. Not original. Does this hurt the car? I think not.

Looks like your muffler is originally off an 83 (best I can tell). The rear bracket actually bolts to the muffler on a 78, not welded. My 82 was similar to yours, welded bracket, but I had the original bracket from the disassembled 78...so I drilled out the weld and will bolt up bracket. I didn't change the dual inlet pipes on mine, whereas, someone has done that on yours.
Rob has some great picture of the muffler they converted in the #107 topic. Theirs is almost original looking, probably as close as one can come without looking at the date code. I've posted some pictures of my exhaust in my #225 topic. Might find some of these pictures beneficial.
"Does it hurt"...I guess that is a matter of opinion and what level of restoration you are desiring?

Brian, we noticed the same thing on our replacement muffler. An '86 production date of an early single input muffler, and it was made of Stainless instead of mild steel like the original. No wonder it lasted, unlike the original!
There are tip sleeves as Rob mentioned, slightly different design early to later cars, but all that I have ever seen are black, as is the heat shield.
Great job!

So painting or powder coating will never be original But the "chrome look " is common and most just hit it with trim paint to get a more original appearance.

Thank you, for all of the info folks. I believe I'm going to leave the ends of the tailpipes unpainted and paint the tips black when I find some.
