Ash tray to cup holder?

It's not too bad. I took my ash tray out and placed a can in its place. Could still shift gears no problem. To keep a can down as low as possible I vision an open base in the cup holder with the can resting on the carpet beneath it. Need a way to rapid prototype!

Rapid prototype would involve, say, a short thin length of plywood or hardwood flooring material cut to the right shape, and a hole saw to cut the hole to correct size.
WalMart et al have inexpensive fold-down cup holders like the one shown below, and the internal brackets which flex a bit to hold the cup can be adapted to fit under the plywood and squeeze the cup to hold it snugly.
Plan B is even simpler: Use the bent-wire water bottle holder for a bicycle, attached to the passenger side of the transmission tunnel cover console, secured by the screw there. It's far enough forward so the passenger's left knee won't bump it, is far enough away from the gearshift, yet still easily reachable by the driver.
Plan C is what I actually did, attached by Velcro to the forward section of the driver's door sill, out of the way and not obstructing view of the outside mirror:

I use one of these in my DD. Picked it up at AZone..little more pricey there, I think, but available...Strong enough to hold a travel mug while sitting in traffic...or a medium cup of java from DD while not interfering with the gearshift ...Since I travel solo most of the time, I put mine on the passenger side of the console.
