Had my local shop install a set of C4 engine mounts into my C2 yesterday. After discussing with the owner of the shop, he agreed this would be a great mod to firm up the car a bit. My plan is also to add a set of KW V3's but wanted to do each mod on its own to see how it changed the dynamic of the car. My goal is a rawer feel, closer to my 964.
First, as many of you know, I was questioning whether my tips were "saggin'" . Below are before and after pics. These mounts def brought the engine up a bit.
Before:
After:
The tech who performed the install, who was actually an ex-pcar dealership tech, seemed concerned that the Engine sat a bit higher with these installed. Not sure how everyone feels but i know may have done this mod with only positive things to say.
The other thing I questioned about the installed was how the tech reinstalled these locking shims (pic below).
Other then cosmetics, does anyone see an issue with how he put these on?
Now, on to the fun part!!! The car feels really good!! Def more solid feeling around corners. Car just feels more planted. I do notice a slight increase in engine noise which was the perfect increase to give the car that rawer feel and sound while driving. Shifting was also firmed up a bit, although I do find it to be a bit notchier then with my original mounts. Seems to "click" into gear which gives the shifter a real positive feel.
All in all, I'm very happy with this mod and would def recommend it to those looking for something in between stock and RS.
Next up, KWs, as soon as they arrive from Germany!!!
It looks like your mechanic had no choice on how those triangle style washers installed. The standard C2 mounts don't have that ridge like the C4 mounts. They fit into the triangular groove on the C2. I have the RS mounts and it has a standard washer instead. I think you'll be ok though
Glad you like the feel though. I noticed a big difference with the RS mounts over my standard worn C2 mounts. Same thing as you felt. The car felt flatter and more planted in corners. A bit more idle vibration, but I like it!
I'm thinking the triangle washer may fit properly... Each bolt can be removed separately and the washer can be clocked properly into place. If not, a file or bench grinder on the washer edge facing the pillow, would make quick work of proper fitment!
IMHO, that is shoddy/lazy workmanship and begs to question if properly torqued on mounting and carrier fasteners.
I did the same install a few years ago. The stock C2 mounts are longer than the C4 mounts. You have to use a spacer to get back to the correct mounting height of the engine. It's , I guess, exactly the distance your exhaust pipes are now higher up. Definitely not correct.
Compare old and new, side by side and you'll see the difference.
I'd get this adjusted.

Dumb Q alert: do we know, in fact, that the C4 mount truly is stiffer than the C2?

Good question - the only fact I know is that the C4 mount truly is cheaper than the C2.
Random tidbit - the 993 C4 mount is nearly identical to the 996 C2 mount. No idea why they went away from the more advanced mount of the 993 C2 for the 996 C2.
Left the locking shims off when I went to the C4 mounts on my C2, clearly not designed for them. Never have seen anything official that suggests why the different mounts C2 versus C4? But the cost differential and likely shorter life, makes the C2 original an odd choice.
I had one original fail when I jacked the car under the engine, all the oil in the mount dumped on the floor. So didn't have any engine mount related issues before the swap and can't notice any difference with the solid rubber C4 mounts - suggesting no difference in feel for street use anyway between good mounts. So what's the engineering reason for solid in the C4?

Curious...did the RS mounts raise your tips a bit too? i guess its tough to compare since who knows how worn these original mounts truly are.

The net result to your car looks good though!
Thanks! I do agree about the work but they're the best shop i can find in my area. Did great work on my 964. Will have this looked at when i'm back for the KW install for sure!

only thing i keep reading is that C4 mounts are stiffer since they're only partially hydraulic filled where as the C2 mounts are fully filled, which accounts for their higher price and softness.
Interesting. I just swapped out for some wevo mounts and tried both blu nd back pillows. Quite a difference. Will start a new thread not to hijack this one the c4 mount.

....
I'm going to have to disagree somewhat. When my orig C2 mounts died (same as you, jacked up the engine and had the right mount pee oil on the garage floor ), I intentionally avoided the firmer alternatives since I already have stiffened up the suspension and my car is a daily commuter. With the orig mounts failing somewhere around the 120k mile mark, the stock mounts were the perfect choice for longevity and compliance ...and now I know, for fit, as well.
