Default I think I'm going to have to break my rule...

Some of you may remember my confessional thread that I posted about a month ago about my inability to stop window shopping for new cars, despite being very happy with what I have.

Well, in all of my window shopping, my rule is to never actually go on test drives, because I'm afraid that a test drive might lead me past the window shopping (usually done from a computer at a very safe distance from purchasing anything) and to an actual purchase. I have to remind myself constantly that the 911 has been my dream car for over 25 years, and I still enjoy just going to sit in the garage to stare at the thing from time to time, even when I'm not driving it... and driving it is pure joy.

The new 2017 718 Cayman S may actually get a test drive though. There's some residual feeling of blaspheme to even think about getting the 911's younger brother (admit it, you guys feel that too), especially now that it is a 4 cylinder. But man, this thing is about the most drop dead gorgeous car that I've seen Porsche produce since the 993. It just looks right.

Reported performance is pretty darn nice too. 177mph top speed, 4.2 0-60 (with some testers reporting 4.0 with the PDK), and that mid-engine balance that I've read so much about. I don't think it will be disappointing anyway.

Not saying I'm going to BUY one of course... but I'm pretty sure a test drive is going to happen.

Fight this same 'disease'. I think we all have some form of it. Look forward to your assessment (and photos in your garage LoL!)...Good luck

Breaking your rule sounds dangerous....

The new Cayman does look really good though.

Amen to that!

I've learned that even after getting my dream car, I still dream.

Now here is another Cayman S, (not a 718 obviously) that is quite well done. A little suspension work and a nice set of wheels can really make this car pop. I'd do almost the exact same thing with mine. If I got one of course.

The new 718 Cayman S is definitely drool-worthy. Last time I stopped at the Porsche dealership in Austin, they had a GT4 for sale and I thought pretty hard about trading in my 911 for it right there.

Porsche marketing department is pretty darn good

just genius...
That said, it is still a 4cyl turbo charged 60k plus car....
I personally just can't justify it in my head.

So I continue to shop 991.1 4s PDK sport chrono plus PTV, sport pasm cars for sale (certified pre owned)...

That dang Porsche bug its never enough to have what you got.
I guess that is why we all can afford Porsches

Nothing wrong in that. Quite a bit of kit. Having forced induction is addicting. On the street, having the torque down low is so nice. The only thing I miss from my other car is having the torque down low (from the car being turbocharged)

I'm partial to the 981, personally, I think it looks better than any 911 (997 and 991).

This is what I love about car guys (and gals). Rather than talk each other down off the ledge, we shove people right over into oblivion, haha!

I can't love the Boxster. There are very few convertibles I like more than their coupe brethren, and the Boxster has never really done it for me. A buddy had a Spyder that I had to admit was a great looking car, but I always preferred the Cayman R to it.

That said, the 981 and 718 both have some great lines. The 718 Cayman though, with a little bit of a suspension drop and the right wheels (Porsche or aftermarket), AND in the right color (Carrera White over red or brown, or black on black for me) is a stunner. Heaven forbid something with that spec happen to find its way to my local dealership. I have enough restraint not to order one (and a wife who would veto that out of hand), but if one is just SITTING there and I happen to see it, well... like I said I'd at least test drive it and see...

I'm partial to the 981 Cayman GTS, but then I'm a little biased

good that ur first test drive is a turbo 4 718... i think that may be the best way to love that powertrain (that is, never having experienced the previous na 6)...

new 718 is very well styled, as is the 981.1 on which it is based. stronger haunches, more masculine, than the previous (but still lovely in their own right) 987 cars
