If you're willing to do a complete rebuild I bet you can get the engine cheap. Dealer out by me says he does at least two engine swaps every time we get a heavy rain. Apparently Panamera drivers like to puddle jump.
It won't be 520 HP ready to go.
Even if it fit, how would you get it to run? If you managed to buy all the main ECUs, what will you do about all the other systems and sensors? The car will be dead in the water if you don't have something as simple as the steering column sensors...which are part of a steering column and not available separately. If you buy a used column and somehow manage to retrofit it into the 928, the engine still won't start because it'll think the column is stolen; that sensor module was "married" to another ECU. If those sensors fail in a Cayenne, you pay $4,000+ for a NEW column and it has to be programmed in at a dealership with a PIWI.
That's the easy one...what will you do about all the drive train components, suspension management, safety systems, security system, etc?
I guess you could always build your own FI and ignition system but it probably won't be any easier. It's not like an LS engine with a never ending aftermarket of parts and support.
you would have to run a Mega squirt EFI or equivalent and no stock wiring. THEN you would have to get the variable timing to work.... that alone makes my head hurt when i read about guys trying doing this on the EFI forums....
Old thread, checking to see if anyone is still curious about this idea.
I have a small shop and have done a bunch of different swaps on various platforms as well as typical automotive work throughout the years. I am military and retiring soon (I hope). As such I was thinking to do one BIG build to establish my shop or just get out of the Automotive landscape all together.
I like the idea of a modern Porsche V8 in an older Porsche car and have been thinking about this specific swap for years now. I think the best way to get it done and obtain the best performance would be to keep as much of the Panamera together as possible. Meaning all the systems you can retrofit and make operable the better. In my head that would include; complete engine/drivetrain system, instrument cluster, HVAC, steering column, and whatever else would fit/work with modifications.
I know this seems aggressive but that's what makes it intriguing to me as well as the fact that it hasn't yet been done.
A ~600hp AWD 928 would be loads of fun especially with modern advances in engine management and suspension/traction controls.
I am planning to buy two cars: wrecked Panamera Turbo and 928 with a clean title.
Please let me know what you all think here.
Thanks!
Mike
I think the Panamera has a traditional Engine > Transmission setup, where the 928 has a rear transaxle. You'd be better of using a third party engine management system rather than trying to bring over everything from the P imho.
Th 928 is teeny tiny compared to the Panamera, I still beleive the sticking point is the size of the lump from the Panamera. Though, they fit LS in the 928, so maybe!
