Should my 84 US car have a third brake light?
No pic, sorry,
My car has a third brake light that looks like it has double sided tape holing it up in place. I am not sure if this was a retrofit or not. The car lived in Canada for most of its life after being sold new in the US. I thought third brake lights were required in 1986.

In the US, the third brake light (CHMSL) was required on all cars starting in the 1986 model year. The only cars I'm aware of that had high-mounted brake lights before that were the 1970's Oldsmobile Toronado and I think the Cadillac Eldorado too. In fact, the Toronado was the inspiration for the law because the models with high brake lights had a much lower rate of rear end collisions.

An alternative-The 3rd brake light on my old GTS was annoying every time I looked in the rear view. Swapped in a 1983 hatch glass and a small LED strip-problem solved. More on post 133:https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...928-gts-7.html T

Thank you kindly. It shall be deleted then!
The strange/funny way I know it is 86 is that my parents bought their first new dealer purchase car, an 1986 IROC (We are from Jersey) and it had the third brake light.
