Heard a muffler bypass in person... Too Loud!

OP was as vague as possible.
It could have been a Renegade V8 conversion with straight pipes, for heaven's sake.
Unless he provides any other information, there is no reason for this thread.

This is the kind of response I would expect from a VW / Jetta person, based on forum nic. My bypass is off the cats, and sounds better to me each time I drive it. This may be due to the cold air intake (K&N) too, and isn't tinny, whinny and definitely doesn't sound like a rice burner. I still have the original cans, but won't change back for anything...it just sounds too good!

My other vehicle has been an exercise in more. More power. More grip. More noise. More stiff. It got to the point where it wasn't enjoyable any more. To each their own, but I'm quite enjoying the 996 as the engineers designed it, it's nice to not let everyone in the neighborhood know when you start your car.
(Okay, fine, maybe some bushings are going to be replaced. And then maybe some konis... I may have a problem.)

I've never seen the attraction of open headers/straight pipes, but then again I also just don't get the incredibly loud Harley exhaust thing. I have noticed that with rare execption (generally if a cam is part of the mix, it's legit), the ludicrously loud cars are the ones that take the longest to accelerate.
I always get a grin and a mental "what a *****" when I hear someone JUMP on the throttle...and you look around to see what's what...and then...S-L-O-W-L-Y...you see a car start to pull away...
Public service announcement: If it takes 18 seconds to make the trip from 50-60MPH, maybe the double-barreled fart cannon isn't the right exhaust for you.
This. When you are making that much noise and the soccer mom in the Grand Caravan is walking you - and does not realize she is part of a drag race - put the damn muffler back on.

Similar note... I used to have a CBR1000... wanted to be cool like all the other rocket jockeys so I threw on a Yosh pipe... then realized it was really neat to be able to hammer it and do it so that everyone else on the road didn't think I was getting on it. It's pretty neat ripping around and doing it pretty stealthy. Sold the pipe and put the stock duals back on and never looked back.

The wife and I drive up to the mountains at least once a month, and every so often I get treated to a Harley stuck in front making ridiculous noise while gasping for air trying to get up to the pass at 8,400 feet - throttle wide open, exhaust screaming, watching the speedo tick...

Make sure to post pictures and dyno sheet when you do!

This is my first dive into "more". My other cars have always been kept quite close to stock. I agree with you that the car is great as it was designed, and I really don't have any complaints. That doesn't mean it can't be improved upon. Whether a turbo kit comes across as an actual improvement to me remains to be seen. The turbo endeavor is a combination of going WAY under budget on the car, finding a nicely priced kit, and desire for a little adventure. I think it will be fun project and I should have a pretty quick car when I'm done. I'll start a build thread as the project ramps up.
And seriously folks, you're all being dramatic. It's not that loud. Also it saves ~45lbs and fabspeed claims 23whp. Even if I get 1/4 of that, that is an excellent and functional mod for $150.

Add to that a Cold Air Intake for under $350 and you might get another 20+ WHP, and that's a hugh improvement for around $500. Where else can you get the reduced weight and increased HP for that price. And it sounds great too!
