I recently had to replace my battery and I'm concerned that my readiness codes are not set. This happened to me in the past, also when my car was due in for it's yearly smog check in NC.
What's the easiest way to check whether or not I even have to do that terrible drive cycle?
I have a Bluetooth ODBII reader, will that work on our cars?
Yes, even a cheap obd2 will take care of that. Just turn on the reader and hit read codes. It should say 0 codes, monitors ready, monitors incomplete and monitors n/a. Make sure the monitors incomplete is zero
Yes, OB2 reader will indicate status.
Results will likely be a mix of ready and incomplete.
Every state is different regarding what mix they are looking for to pass emissions testing.
Can't help you with NC laws
Here's what I get when I start the car and use the reader to see whats a'happening! Car was cold and I didn't run it for long enough to get hot. Anything seem out of place? I can do additional readings tomorrow after a decent drive.
That stinks! To all people it could happen to! Sounds like you had no choice but to anyone else, if you have the choice in the order of operations; it's 1. inspection, 2. change battery. Even if your car won't start and needs to be jumped it will likely retain the codes but once you disconnect, they are gone.
and to any newbies, after you change that battery, a couple weeks or months regular driving later (depending how often you drive) and the codes will reset automatically without having to fool with the drive cycle nonsense.

Is there anything short of pulling the battery that can send these codes backwards in regards to their state of readiness?
These latest pictures were after it had been in the shop to test for the codes and to the best of my knowledge they didn't pull the battery. Radio stations were all still inmemory etc.
Just an fyi. I followed the drive cycle posted by plima007 and it worked perfectly and no need to do it twice. Much simpler than the bmw drive cycle that's been posted.
