I have a 2003 Boxster base w/headers and a Fabspeed exhaust. A while back (4 or 5 mos ago) on a road trip I stopped and filled up at a self service station, and immediately upon leaving got a CEL....

Opened up the "hood" and checked intake thoroughly for signs of wetness or leaks. Everything is dry, tight, and in good shape. No cracks, cuts, dry rot, or broken clamps.

Car is running better...

Mystery solved. The pivot pin in the shifter is either bent (doubtful) or has worn eccentric(more likely) and it has turned into a position where it is jammed up solid and will not allow the shifter...

I can engage 1st, 3rd, and 5th no problem. I drove the last 8 or 9 miles home that way. Even feels normal from neutral gate forward. Shifter only binds up when pulling it back.

According to the Tire Rack ratings, looks like the Continental Extreme contact DWS or DW are the best price/performance balance for the Boxster.
