Is it possible the IMS sprocket has spun on the shaft? I believe factory they are friction welded or pressfit, aftermarket drill and pin the sprocket to prevent any chance of it spinning.

Just be aware tracking a 996 esp a high mileage has it's risks. Stuff like all your chain tensioner pads will be worn and brittle etc.

So I got the car back, when I picked it up I immediately had to take it back as a blinked bulb seemed to pop. So they fixed it while I waited.

Nicasil costs more $$ and porsche in 96/97 was pretty broke so they use lokasil or alusil which is not a plating. Unfortunately it reduces the strength of the cylinder walls
